Somewhere out in the forest, a call is made. It's a very quiet call, but it really is intended to draw someone's attention ( Read more... )

She's not the only one in the woods right now. There's a mrrryip? noise, low and thrumming, and suddenly a three-legged creature about... oh, a human would say maybe about the size of a Labrador... comes trotting out from the underbrush.

It stops in its tracks and blinks a whole lot of eyes- seriously, the entire front end is covered in 'em- at once.

That's not the sort of thing one often sees, even in or around the Everfree Forest. On the other hand, it's a new and exciting animal.

"Hey there, little guy," she says, crouching a bit. "Is this your home?"

It trots forward a few paces, then hops up onto its hind leg to get a better look at Fluttershy. It looks like its mouth is on its underside, near the two forward legs.

"I've never seen anything like you before," she murmurs. "I wonder what you're called?"

It is, perhaps, possible that there's some understatement involved there.

There's places to be outside, with the weather being warm and summerlike...

And up a tree is a perfectly sensible place to sit and read, for a little boy! It's safe from certain ground-dwelling predators, even if the little black and gold one at the base of the tree is more than enough deterant.

"...hello? Who's there?"

When Fluttershy hears a voice from a tree, she's expecting it to be another pegasus. Yes, other types of ponies can get into trees, but most of them think it's more work than it's worth.

She doesn't expect to see... something. It looks more like a monkey than anything else she knows, but there are clothes and no tail and of course speaking words.

Speaking of which... "O-oh, nopony." She shrinks back a bit. No, wait, she wants to meet who's here. "I-I mean, I'm Fluttershy." She's not very loud.

There's a grunt and a bark from the base of the tree..and something that looks like a stocky, tiny wingless dragon is getting to it's feet looking at her curiously.

"...I'm Tyler.....and that's Winston. Winston, behave."

While it does look somewhat like a dragon, it's not a huge, gigantic, terrifying, enormous, teeth-gnashing, sharp-scale-having, horn-wearing, smoke-snoring, could-eat-a-pony-in-one-bite, totally all-grown-up dragon. And while it's probably capable of hurting Fluttershy if it wants to, that's not necessarily reason she needs to be scared of it. Just careful.

"Oh, um, what is he?" She could, perhaps, ask 'what are you' as well, but one thing at a time.

If she listens closely, she might catch a steady thwacking noise from the direction of the firing range.
All right, so Sam isn't firing anything, as such; he's got a set of knives, and with them is making short work of destroying the target in front of him. But the targets are there for anyone to use, and he thought he might as well.

Fluttershy does, indeed, hear the sounds. And goes to investigate, because they might mean somepony's working or playing.

When she gets to where she can see what's going on, though, she stumbles back a few steps with a gasp. Throwing knives? That's... somepony could get hurt that way. Or some... whatever that is that's throwing them.

Yes. Yes, they could. Which is both why Sam keeps in practice and why he does his practicing in a place where people won't get in his way.
The gasp catches his attention, and... well, he's got experience with centaurs (and a particularly annoying unicorn) in his world; it's not much of a stretch to assume the winged horse is sentient.
"Hello."

"... Hello."

Garrulous, she isn't. But people doing hurty-things are scary. Even if they're doing them away from others, like this one is. And even if they're in familiar shapes, like this one isn't.

Alex has a rucksack full of handy hiking tools, and he is Exploring the Forest. He doesn't actually expect to need them, but Ian taught him nothing if it wasn't preparedness.

Somehow, he still doesn't feel prepared for this. "Hello?"

Alex isn't the only one who's not as prepared as he thought. On the other hand, to Fluttershy he looks pretty well prepared for the Unknown (as far as she can tell from a first impression of his species), and therefore he's probably pretty knowledgeable.

"Um, hi."

Not that she really knows how to deal with a knowledgeable stranger. But she's making an effort!

It's... it's a horse? A yellow one? With... are those wings? Well, all right, he'll roll with it. "Are you new?"

Notice how he doesn't ask if she's a hallucination. He's a very polite boy.

Very polite. And a good thing, since nopony - hallucination or not - likes being called a hallucination.

"I... I guess so. What is this place?"

OH MY GOD, THEY'RE REAL squeals the thoughts of a little girl who's floating about ten feet in the air. She hasn't said anything yet though as she's stuck in fangirl mode.

[OOC-Please imagine the icon is a gleeful look and not quite so horrified. Closest I've currently got.]

Unlike some pegasi, Fluttershy is not especially focused on the sky. This means that she's less likely to notice things above her.

The girl, on the other hand, might notice that the pony looks like she could use some help.

And helping is what heroes do!

"Hi," Julie calls out as she floats down to a more conversational height. "Is everything all right?"

Reply

needs_fern July 15 2011, 02:31:46 UTC
Julie is unlike anything Fluttershy has ever seen, and she's appearing quite suddenly from above, without visible means of support (i.e., wings). So it's no wonder Fluttershy is startled.

She lets out a squeak and backs up a couple of steps toward the forest. She's not fleeing, not yet, but she's clearly not comfortable either.
