[Out of Milliways: Northeast Camp Alpha. RIP, Captain Stewart Devlin.]

The door opens and there is an ungodly stink behind it. This is what happens when combat with plasma and laser weaponry gets smoky and the blood of multiple species is spilled. Ellen wades out of the smoke in her power armor and pops her helmet off immediately upon seeing that ( Read more... )

Charlie's sitting at a table not too far from the door.

The adrenaline rush is probably why it takes her less time than usual to get to her feet, and why she's gripping her cane like a weapon instead of leaning on it.

"Um," Ellen says to no one in particular as the deathclaw stares at her. "It should really be falling down with uncontrollable seizures right now. Or its head should be exploding or something. I really hope somebody else can line up a shot on it just in case because I don't think I can get a bead on it in time if something goes wrong."

"I've got it," Charlie says, low. "I hope. What is it?"

"It's a deathclaw. Fast. Aggressive. The thing on its head is a mind control device that I was overriding," Ellen says. "We're supposed to be out of range of the transmitter, though. The device should be inducing a seizure or worse..."

Pause.

"Of course, if it's not seizing, it should really have tried to kill us all at least twice by now."

Oh.

That's unexpected.

Felix looks up at the smell. Then he freezes for a moment at the sight of the thing in the doorway, before getting up from the table and reaching for his sword. Before he draws it, though, he stops himself. Sure, it looks like a monster, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a patron.

Even if it does look more monstrous than most of them.

But until he knows, he's just going to stay alert, keep an eye on it, and try to stay where he can move without hitting anyone.

At some point he may even notice Ellen.

"Um," Ellen finally says, her eyes still on the deathclaw. "It... I don't know if anyone is paying attention right now but I'd really like to look away from this thing if I can. Does it look to you like it's going to jump? Or have a seizure or something?"

That's certainly a good way to get noticed. As it happens, Felix had been watching for just such behaviors.

"I... don't think so. It looks like it's just standing."

Ellen sounds like she has some idea what the thing is, so Felix is switching some of his attention to her.

"Okay, good," says Ellen. "At least on the not-jumping front. But it really shouldn't have been able to follow me here with that thing on its head."

It doesn't seem to notice that it's being talked about, for whatever that's worth. It's just... looming. Pointily.

Ben spots Ellen and gives a little smile...that is until he spots what's behind her. By the time she realizes her shadow is too long he's nearby, braced for a leaping tackle.

"Nice dog ya got there," he says by way if finding out if this is the case.

"It's a deathclaw," Ellen says, not really willing to look away from the thing. "And by all rights that thing on its head should be giving it fits, given how far out of the control signal's range we are. I don't know how it followed me here."
