First entrance

In the small hours of the night, after their last customer has trundled out the door into the darkness and Blackie has disappeared to do whatever it is he does when he's not in the cafe, Fay heads off to the ladies' room to freshen up--well, that was the plan anyway. It doesn't quite work out that way ( Read more... )

There is a teen aged boy near the door with a sling on his arm who suddenly steps back and holds up his hand defensively.

"I didn't do it!"

She takes a step away as well, startled.

Sure, she's in a bar, and there tend to be people in bars, but having one suddenly be right there next to her, well, it caught her a little off guard.

"Of course you didn't," she says, blinking.

"Whew! I'm always getting blamed for stuff."

Granted, stuff is usually his fault.

"I know the feeling," she says.

Well, not so much lately, but when she was younger. The downside to being the oldest child.

After a moment, she adds, "Aren't you a little young to be in a bar?"

"It has a mind of its own." The pale girl watches with a crooked smile.

She's dressed in... well, strange things: the usual stompy boots of course, but also low-riding leather trousers and a lacy bustier. A black button-up shirt with sleeves rolled above elbows, tied just under her bosom; necklace, earrings, multiple finger rings.

"Everything here does."

They get all kinds, in the cafe, so the girl's style choices don't really raise an eyebrow.

But Fay is still processing the whole there's-a-bar thing.

"Things do, in general," she says. "Ever have a toaster that won't toast right?"

"But the reason, leads to treason, to some, who come, and go without minds." Ah, but are they crazy? "Things and things, crawling into the dark corners and watching."

"You're new."

She'd seen and heard some strange performance artists when she'd lived in San Francisco, but she feels it's a little late in the evening to be understanding riddles, so she answers the part of that that she can.

"To being here, yeah."

Clementine can't help but raise an eyebrow and glance in Fay's direction.

"...Did the door just grab your can?"

You never know in this place.

"No, just gave me a shove," she says, still giving the door a look.

Well, where the door used to be.

"It seems to think I can't pick up on subtlety."

"This place hates subtle. That's fine with me - it's never been my strong suit."

She points over her shoulder. "Did someone give you the newbie talk?" Clem's newish herself, but she knows what to say and how to say it.

"I don't mind a little directness, especially when I'm in a new place," she says, "but I don't need to be pushed around by doors."

She could say more, but she's seen what happened when Frank insulted the cafe; the last thing she needs is to anger the cafe or wherever this place is.

"There's a talk?"
