Sharpe knows a uniform when he sees one, even partly removed, as well as a young officer. He glances the boy over with sympathetic amusement.

He nods once, and studies Sharpe for a moment with a stare that can be creepy given the right mood, so determined and focused that he's nearly looking through you, or enough at you to take you apart block by block until he understands how things work.

He's putting the places with dates--his mind works fast--and nodding to himself at how they match up. "Ze odds of liwing through injuries zen vas abysmal," he says unabashedly. "You must hawe been qvick to dodge."
