The engineers have started construction on the first prototype. It's not anywhere close to ready--more like the outline of an aircraft than anything else--but it's exciting all the same. "Nice sketches," Jake says. He's showered, he's wearing civies (including a worn leather jacket) and his hair isn't quite so regulation Marine.

Not that he creeps up on Natalie, he's not that stupid. His combat books make plenty enough noise to warn of his approach.

She shrugs.

"Yes and no. They're not designing it exclusively for me, or even people in my program, but they want to make the most of our skill sets just in case. The last time they were building space-based fighters, my unit didn't exist."
