Alyx may notice that Ed's hair has been combed and trimmed recently. It's still poofy but no longer ill-groomed. And it smells faintly of coconut.

She turns the cowboy doll over in her hand and frowns at the ring on its back. "What is...?" She pulls it.
"Thar's a snake in mah boots!" says a slightly wobbly recording of a male voice from the inside of the doll's torso.

Sativa's is taken back by the doll's exclamation. "...Possessed!"
Or it's got Technology in it. That would be the second guess.
