The board is empty for a reason.

That reason is that the man behind it has no intention of actually tending bar. He just wanted a drink, and bar told him, through napkins, that she was going to sleep and if he's the lucky winner of tonight's bartending lottery. If he wants a beer, the napkin said, he can get it himself.

"Beer," says Lawton. "I know beer.

"Bottle or tap?"

He's not bartending; he's doing her a favour.

"Uh."

Floyd glances at the labels on the taps and the bottles. "Pale. Hybrid. Ale. Some bottles in weird colours. Pick one."

X settles at the bar, gaze flicking from the empty specials board to the man with the beer.

After a few moments of silent contemplation she tilts her head.

Slightly.

This is all very strange.

"You are not working?"

Lawton lifts up both hands, demonstrating that he is not carrying any firearms, and therefore, not working.

"I'm drinking. Join me?"

Her head tilts a little more at his gesture, but she seems to read it well enough.

And after a moment --

"Okay."

Beat.

"I would like milk. Please."

"Really? Just milk?"

He shrugs and looks into one of the fridges. Oh hey, a carton of milk. He throws it to her.
