Lawton has been coming into this bar more often than it seems, considering time for him back home isn't going as fast as it is in here. After all, he's got no reason not to come into a magical bar where the booze flows freely and there's no shortage of entertainment, and he can eat something that isn't eggs.

Not that he's complaining about Blake's ( Read more... )

Not at all.

Does he mind an armed woman in BDU pants, combat boots, black tank top and 'dog tags'? Armed, as in wearing a tactical belt with two Colt .45 pistols.

She looks like someone who is not having the greatest day, but when your world has been at war almost nonstop for over a decade... there are no really good days.

Hm, beer is a good idea, so good that she's carrying her own.

Well, her sense of humor is just weird, no doubt. "And who you shoot for?"

"Whoever hires me," Lawton says, an oral shrug. He doesn't offer any thought on who his usual employer is, or who arranges the contracts.

"Good money on that? I was thinking about going mercenary after the war." If she lives that long. "I'm getting tired of being the 'hero' and getting shot at for crap pay."

"So, I can go doing the same moral high ground job I did before, and be paid a decent salary?" Tanya whistles. "Hm, tempting."

Moral high ground, better pay, and the choice of just walking out if she wants to.

Very tempting.

"If that kinda thing turns you on," Lawton concedes.

He's always bee one fot eh moral low ground, even when officially Government approved.

"Sincerely? When the reds invaded Germany, ruined my chance of getting a college degree, forced me to leave my home, and killed a lot of my friends, I joined the resistance because I thought I had not much more to lose and could at least get some payback."

"Then the Allied High Command discovered me and decided to make me the heroic poster girl, which meant painting a bullseye on my forehead. The Russians put a price on my head. Now I was a tragic heroine, fighting for freedom while avoiding the bullets of assassins. Sometimes I wonder of they did it on purpose so I could not just walk out."

She waves over a waitrat. "I moved to the United States to get away from the bullshit, but it did not work, since the Reds spent ten years recovering and rebuilding in secret and started another world war."

He really doesn't remember asking for her life story. He also doesn't remember history really going like she says.

Still, if she wants to talkon, he won't stop her. He just hopes he can get a beer before he loses the waitrat.

Oh, no worries, Tanya knows how it goes: "Get me a beer, and I guess one for him too." She talking his ear off, the least she can do is buy Lawton a drink.

"So, the moral high ground is more like what I'm used to. Or what people see me standing on, after the propaganda boys are done polishing my image."

Oh right, he wondered where she was going with that.

"Sound slike you've got such a good PR team, what does it matter where you stand under all of it?"

"The pay still sucks, and I don't like PR making people believe I'm something I'm not." Tanya shakes head. "I'd like to be able to retire and not have people acting like I'm a movie star or something."

"Sounds like you need to make that mind up yourself."
Not something he particularly cares for.

Tanya smirks again. "Know someone who's hiring?"

"Not in this place," Lawton remarks. "I'm new."

"Better watch out, then. The place is supposed to be neutral ground, but is not." Tanya shakes head. "But nothing new there, everywhere you find bullshit."

"At least the food is good, the drinks are better, and this place has its own tropical beach."
