It took some time, but the door led to a quiet little hamlet in France, and Alice made sure Kate had clothes that were appropriate for the occasion, telling her not to worry about the cost.
Loading Roz and Goldie into a cat carrier had been harrowing, but they were settled at last and ready to go.
Bags in hand, her room - not just her room, but the entire bar - felt empty; but she couldn't muster an ounce of regret for running away.

She stops at the Bar, and deposits a few notes: There are some to her friends, to stable hands who might miss her, and anyone she might be breaking engagements with. To her friends, she simply says:
I've been invited to stay with some friends at their estate in France.
I'm not sure how long I will be gone, but please take care until my return.
