Connor stumbles through the door. He wasn't watching where he was going, but was instead intent on reading a compass.

When he looks up, he smiles. "Oh, brilliant. Milliways again!"

He likes this place. It's like a con with cosplay, but it's all real. It's a geek's dream come true ( Read more... )

Speaking of cosplay (or not) --

There's a woman in what looks like pretty authentic Wonder Woman paraphernalia sitting at a nearby table.

She's even got a lasso that looks nothing like yellow rope.

She's also looking up at him and smiling warmly.

"You're another one with no control over your door?"

"I defend the planet from alien invasion and the depradations of supervillains."

Diana's smile is a little wry.

"Superheroing, I think is the term. And yourself?"

He tilts his head, torn between the desire to tell what he does and his promise to Dr. Cutter to never talk about what he does.

"Secret government research team. It's classified."

Diana doesn't laugh.

"I see. Am I allowed to ask which country?"

Earth variants occasionally have very different geographical divisions.

Or names.

Among other differences.

(And there is no guarantee Connor is from an Earth variant.)

"I think it's safe," he says, rather seriously. "Britain."

He leaves off London. Just in case.

"Not the United Kingdom?"

It doesn't hurt to check, does it?

"I'm most recently from the United States, myself. Washington DC, before you ask."

"Oh, right, United Kingdom. That's it."

Cool. He wonders if Wonder Woman's other versions come in, or whether all the versions are the same and exist in one person, or...

Okay, that's a little too much speculation. He's going to stick with "I'm having a conversation with Wonder Woman."

"So superheroing. That must be exciting."

"Well, it keeps me busy. And I get to meet a lot of interesting people."

She lets that statement sit there for a moment, then laughs.

"But no. You're right. It is exciting. Sometimes too much so, but -- "

"My job is exciting, too. And yeah, sometimes too much so."

He looks around. He shouldn't be telling what he does, but this is Wonder Woman. If she can't keep a secret, who can?

"We track space-time anomalies and the creatures that come through them. Prehistoric animals mostly. But that's strictly confidential. I mean, I know I said it was classified, and it is, but I reckon here I can tell a little about what I do."

"I won't mention it to anyone else."

The gift of trust, even between strangers, isn't one that Diana takes lightly.

"Are you just responsible for the tracking, or do you -- do something about it? Or is that a different part of your organization?"

Diana, you see, has worked with government agencies before.

"I help identify the creatures, track the anomalies. I created and manage the database."

His smile is huge and proud.

"And I help do something about it, too."

He may not have been given a gun like the rest of the team or strike as cool a figure as Stephen and Dr. Cutter, but he can damn well use an oar to fend off a prehistoric sea creature.

"It sounds like quite a job," Diana comments.

She's smiling, though, too.

"How frequent are these anomalies? And are they natural, or are they induced by some sort of device?"

"We're working on figuring that out. Right now, they happen randomly, but not too often."
