"Make that two," John instructs the wait-rat, drawing up a chair at Ellen's table. Instead of his MJLONIR suit, the Spartan is wearing a plain set of fatigues and a gray t-shirt emblazoned with an eagle and globe logo marked with the letters UNSC.

The soldier nods across the table at Ellen. "It's been a while," he states.

Ellen looks up at the newcomer, blinks once in surprise, and smiles. "Hi, John," she says. "So it- so it has. How have you been?"

"I was worried... did not see you around in a while." Then she stops and listens to herself, a bit surprised.

"I've been a- a little busy," Ellen says, looking down at the table. "But I don't think that much time passed back- back home. It must be the door."

She makes a wry face at the comment. "I think," she says, "that most of it- well, there was always the fear of a nuclear war, before it actually happened. I think it was a point of pride, for the manufacturers to make things they could sell as being able to stand up to an atomic blast. Or something."
