Jack's currently sitting at the bar, drink next to his right hand, a book propped up in front of him.  Or, more specifically, a Sony Daily Edition Color eReader; not exactly top-of-the-line for his time, but it's about as fancy as he remembers ebook readers being, the last time he saw one.  It's not what he would have chosen, but besides the text- ( Read more... )

Jane is feeling quite good when she enters, holding a letter and notices the man apparently reading on, she's not sure what it is. So she slows down to try and look without being rude.

Jack senses someone behind him and turns quickly, not realizing that he's glaring. He hasn't been entirely comfortable in the bar since he'd switched back into his own body.

"Sorry," he says, his expression softening as he spots the young woman. "You just startled me for a second."

His glare jars her and she looks away and bobs a curtsy,

"Pardon me, sir, I did not mean to be rude."

Jack shakes his head. "It's okay. Like I said, I was just startled. I didn't mean to scare you."

Oh, she recognizes the look of 'too much screen reading'.

"You right there?"

Jack startles at the voice, glancing up to see who's speaking before pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Yeah. Just reading too much," he says, giving the woman a quick, evaluating glance from head-to-toe without even really thinking about it. It's almost insinct now, to see if someone looks like a threat at first glance.

Trudy's short (5'4), stocky of build and she carries herself like career military. Military pilot, sure, but still - she's been a Marine since she was eighteen, and that thing leaves its mark. Combat boots, the loose pants and singlet that is standard 'off-duty', but no dog-tags.

Still, Trudy is one of those people who tends to carry her comfort-zone around with her, and it takes her a lot to switch from 'easy-going' to 'Marine'.

(Jack, too, has gotten an evaluating glance)

"Yeah, I know the feelin'," she says, accent something like what happens when you take a girl raised in Texas, shove her in Peru for a few years, and let her run around New Jersey. "Work?"

"No," he says, a little brusquely, before he catches himself. "Just something that might help a friend, though not likely."

Even though he recognizes the outfit as off-duty military, it's still a little difficult for him to turn off that part of him that equates military with a threat, even if she is a good few inches shorter than him. It's not even conscious at this point.

Enter Castle, ill-timed interloper, with a travel tray of coffees balanced on one hand. It's half past eight, Manhattan time, and he's either very late or very early to meet up with Beckett at the precinct. Either way, the coffee is a good, liquid apology. Or so he's hoping.

He bellies up to the bar and puts the coffees down, mopping his pink hand with a napkin. "Spot me a couple of those little milk creamers, wouldja'?" A small dish burps into being on the counter. Castle peers among the selection. "You got any flavoured ones? French Vanilla, Hazelnut --" he grins "-- yeah, that's the stuff. Can't believe Starbucks was out of this stuff. What are we, savages?"

Castle drops a handful of creamers into his pocket and turns to go, catching sight of the guy with the screen-lit face.

"I know you, right?"

Jack turns, nodding when he recognizes Castle.

"Jack Bauer, friend of Kate Beckett's. You're Castle, right? How is the case going?" he asks, his face betraying more concern than he'd like.

Castle puts down a couple of coffee stirrers and offers his hand. "Yeah, I remember you. We met in the Bar -- well, here, I guess -- 'few months back."

He pales when Jack mentions the case. "She told you about that, huh? Hits a little too close to home, if you ask me. To be honest, I'm starting to feel like we're chasing our tails."

Jack shakes Castle's hand briefly, trying to tilt his hand so the scarring on the back isn't noticeable.

"Yeah, she did. She didn't really have much of a choice; it was pretty obvious that something was really bothering her. I take it you don't have any more leads, then."

The faint signs of the headache Jack is getting is obvious enough- and does speak out against using an electronic book, but it could be due to other things. It still wouldn't hurt to get the man's opinion on using such a device-

Though as she approaches, Athena makes sure to keep to in his peripheral vision, and she can wait until there seems to be a break in his concentration.

"Your pardon?"

Athena quickly shakes her head, with an apologetic smile. "Hardly, though I may be in yours, in a way. I was simply curious as to how you're finding the- the electronic reader, is it?" She motions at the eReader.

"Though each company seems to have its own name for the device, though I believe they work similarly."

"Yeah, they do, thought it's been a while since I saw one. It's working out pretty well. Definitely lighter than a lot of books."

Any problems he's had are his own, not the problem of the eReader, really.
