There happens to be a very different sort of woman sitting at a table nearby, riveted by what she now sees, an expression of disgust written across her face. It isn't that Joan is doing anything wrong, per se, but Jack has her own opinions of women who feel the need to 'freshen up', or wear make up at all for that matter. It's much easier to judge a book by it's cover, and to Jack's eyes Joan may as well be hanging a sign around her neck that reads 'Hey men in the room, pay attention to me!'.
All that said, Jack is not above being civil for the sake of conversation.
...okay she totally is, but she's not above trying. A little bit.
"Big date tonight?"
A curt remark and a cocked eyebrow are the best Jack can offer in terms of a friendly greeting, but it's a huge step for her. Normally some sort of projectile would be involved at this point.
She clicks the compact shut with a press of two fingers, closing the lipstick and returning both to the small clutch that rests on the bar. Only then does she swivel on the barstool to respond to the person speaking to her.
Joan knows perfectly well that it's impolite to stare, but that doesn't mean she's any less surprised by the sight in front of her. Her eyebrows knit together in thought, and she blinks a couple times before she actually manages a response that won't come across as inappropriate or be misconstrued in any way.
"Not at all," she answers, soft and sweet by all appearances.
Jack is most distrusting of those who appear to be all happy sunshine and courteous smiles at first glance. She's not saying that said people aren't genuine, but she's met more than enough liars and frauds to know that her trust is something to be reserved almost indefinitely.
"I thought that was the sort of thing women went to the bathroom to do?" Jack replies, her faux curious expression remaining exactly the same. "You know, excuse yourself in order to visit the powder room? That sort of thing."
Jack's feet, at first resting atop the table, have now been placed firmly on the floor in order to allow the young woman to lean forwards in her seat. It's quite difficult for her to fake polite curiosity when every facet of her outward appearance screams 'I would love a chance to fuck you up', but she enjoys a challenge.
"Oh, I've heard about the bathroom here," Joan assures her, shifting her weight on the barstool in order to cross her legs at the knee. "I think my femininity won't be taken into question if I choose to put on my lipstick here instead."
Surprise has given way to mild interest flickering over the redhead's features, and she lifts one eyebrow, a silent raising of the gauntlet.

"Just a little reapplying."

Joan, too, enjoys a challenge.
