Jim's taken Rachat all the way out by the mountains. The cold and snow seem to both neither rider nor horse. And Jim has a thermos full of really good coffee (made with the beans that Ensign Rager got him for the holidays). Looking back, Jim sees nothing but woods. No woods, no building. Just woods. The topology of things here is, to put it ( Read more... )

99 has come to the realization that Max may, in fact, be a double agent who was working for both CONTROL and KAOS this entire time.

It's not a comforting thought, to say the least.

It may explain why, when the door shows up to Milliways in lieu of her D.C. apartment, that she walks through without hesitation and settles down at a corner booth to order a drink.

Jim enters the Bar with windburnt cheeks and a little water and mud splashed on his excursion jacket. He looks tired but happy. Riding can be exhilarating.

But so can seeing a face he's been missing. "Laura!"

It takes only a small pause for her to change facial expressions - though she is grateful to see a familiar face despite current reservations.

"You look like you've had a time of it."

"I took Rachat out for a nice, long ride. We went to the edge of the mountains, and then didn't take it easy for once.

"I probably took a bit of a chance, given the conditions and how few people are out there. But sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind." Even when the wind is pretty strong.

It's been a while since Kate has gone out riding as far as the mountains; with all the excitement of the past month, she's been keeping things rather close to the bar. That has not stopped her from being out in the stables almost every morning and most evenings, however. She's by the fence line at the gate, checking for some rotten wood a hand had left a note about, when she hears the unmistakable sound of hooves moving at full-tilt.

She watches Jim's approach, smiling crookedly. She thinks perhaps it's getting close to time for them to have another rematch.

"Howdy, Kate." Jim's cheeks a bit windburnt, and there are small splatters of mud on his Starfleet-issue all-weather jacket. "How are you?" It's the first he's seeing her since Doc's unexpected return.

She's leaning against the fencepost by the time he's within speaking distance, arms crossed in front of her.

"Howdy, Jim," she smiles in return. "I'm well 'nough. Prob'ly not as sanguine as y'look, though."

"Rachat and I have been enjoying a bit of hard riding today. This is perfect weather for it." Cold, muddy, windy...you can tell that Jim learned to ride in a place like Idaho.
