Ava is roasting chestnuts on a somewhat-less-than-open fire.

She's not really sure what you do with the chestnuts once you roast them, so this seems to mostly entail tossing chestnuts into the fire and watching them blacken. But she also has eggnog, and has broken out her Santa hat for the occasion, and is currently tying the final ribbons onto ( Read more... )

In a flagrant abuse of Millitime, Bela does indeed stop by. You know how holidays are - all the days run together!

"Hey, Ava."

The fang marks on Bela's neck are gone. This is because she's paid a sorcerer a lot of money to take care of the problem. Magic is gross and dangerous, for the most part, but it does come in handy.

"My God, a Santa hat now? You're going all out."

"I freelance. I procure unique items for a select-"

She rolls her eyes at her pat explanation. "I'm a thief and a con artist. I specialize in supernatural items, but I'll pretty much steal anything for the fun of it. I collect information for my own use along the way."

She beams!

"Oh my God you're a cat-burglar. That is so awesome!"

"I guess I am, and, yeah, it is most of the time. It's the adrenaline rush, you know? It's glamorous and lucrative. But I'm looking for something I need, and I can't find it. I don't even know for sure what it is. So it gets frustrating. The jobs I take are fun, but they're more often than not kind of pointless."

Being a vengeance demon would be many things, but pointless is not one of them.

Ava considers this, glumly. When she was a secretary she'd felt a total lack of direction; maybe that was part of why she was set on marrying so young.

... Whatever.

"My career counselor in high school used to tell us to make lists," she says. "She was big into lists. She also told me I'd better hope to marry early, though, so maybe her professional advice wasn't that great."

She scoffs.

"Sounds like my mother. She was of the opinion that a) I should marry early and well like she did, and b)I wouldn't be able to catch a 'decent' husband when the time came and would thus be a failure. She didn't care for me much."

Ava blinks.

And remembers placidly that Bela's parents perished in a demonic accident.

"Why did she think you wouldn't be good at getting married?" A beat. "That was phrased really awkwardly. You get it."

"She didn't think me good for much of anything. I was ugly, clumsy, stupid - you get the idea. Of course, she was a much better drunk gadabout than a mother."

She shrugs. "Oh well. She's dead and gone, and I'm damned good at what I do, no matter what it is. So."

Ava frowns.

"Plus you're really hot."

That's always a consolation, right?

"Hell yes, I am." She preens a little.

She giggles, reaching for her eggnog and taking a hearty sip.

"Actually, I'll drink to that-- screw vampires and dead parents! We're young and awesome and totally hot."

She clinks her martini glass against Ava's.

"Absolutely. You'll be pretty forever. So that's a huge plus."

"Right?" Ava beams.

"Merry fucking Christmas."

She throws her head back and laughs. "And a Happy fucking New Year."
