But, that is not here and now: Marlowe does not really know anybody involved in the mess, and most likely would deplore the way Kate Barlow and Josiah Scurlock handled the whole situation.
For starters, Mexican standoffs are dumb: you do not pull a gun to wave it around.
Anyway... Philip Marlowe, private detective, takes a seat nearby and orders bourbon, ready to start relaxing after a long day of work: his suit is a bit rumpled and there is dust on his shoes and hat, but it seems to simply add to his hardboiled looks. He is not a cop, but he is not a criminal either, and Ramon might take a guess based on any experience with meeting private detectives.
Even if they did not 'meet'. Yet.

That aside, he casts an eye over the guy and then nods at him in acknowledgement. It's been a few weeks of hardly talking to anyone, being sociable isn't going to kill him.
