Cal was right about coming unBound as soon as Halloween was over, and he's ignored a Door or two in the couple of days since he got home

From her seat down the bar, Joan looks over, lit cigarette in hand.

"Special occasion?"

"My birthday," Cal answers, trying the words out almost experimentally.

It may not technically be true, but as far as Cal is concerned - and he's very strict with himself in these matters - it isn't a lie.

She nods - once, slowly.

"Oh. Well, happy birthday, then."

Her eyes move to the candle.

"Aren't you going to make a wish?"

"Thank you."

Cal pauses, and looks at the candle.

"I don't know what to wish for," he admits.

The cupcake is noted.

"Happy birthday, Favourite," Sam says, sliding an arm around Cal and kissing his neck.

A few seconds later, Cal gets his very own little star for a present!

Cal smiles, slipping an arm around Sam in return.

Then he lights up - so to speak - as the star appears. It's beautiful and intricate, bobbing lazily in the air. As stars will do.

"That's beautiful," he says.

"Thanks," Sam smiles. "I borrowed some ideas from the Viewing Window. You can touch it, if you want."

Cal nods. He can see it, a little - subtle similarities, but without even a hint of that quality that captures Cal's attention until he manages to wrench himself away from it.

At Sam's suggestion, he reaches out and gently runs his fingers over the magic. The feel of Sam's magic is pleasantly familiar by now.
