Out of Milliways: The Scrapyard.

The door swings open on an August day that smells of blood and dust. The blood smell remains after it closes, but it's largely attached to the smaller of a pair of bedraggled figures. Ellen's in her relatively well-repaired suit of black stealth armor, and she's being followed by an odd-eyed dog that has most ( Read more... )

Ichigo's reading up in the rafters when he catches the sound of a familiar voice down below. He turns his head to see if he can spot her, and is somewhat surprised when he not only spots her (in some rather intimidating armor) but also a dog.

Or what looks like a dog, anyways. A dog which may or may not have slaughtered and/or eaten some people on it's way here by the looks of it.

"If I come down there," he yells down to her, "what are the chances that thing's going to try and kill me? Is he, like, a mutant dog or something? Does he talk?"

How is he supposed to know?

"Huh?" Ellen glances up, rubbing her hand against her forehead. It leaves a grubby streak, but that's nothing new. "Oh. No, I think he's just a regular dog. He was trying to protect a human and he got really hurt. I'm trying to patch him up."

He'll have to believe her about the 'regular dog' thing. For now, anyways. Leaving his book behind (it wasn't a very good one anyways), Ichigo hops down to the ground, not yet approaching in case the dog isn't exactly friendly.

"How bad is it? Where's he hurt?"

Ichigo's not exactly a veterinarian, but he's lived in a clinic most of his life, so he knows some basic stuff.

"He's been grazed by a couple of bullets," Ellen says, "maybe worse. And one of the people he killed had gone after him with a lead pipe. I held him still long enough for a stimpak to start working, so he's had some accelerated healing already, but he's got a lot more to work on."

She crouches down to rub the dog behind the ears; he gives a quiet little sigh and thumps his tail tiredly.

"Hello Ellen," Annabelle says with a smile. "Did you find a friend?" she asks, gesturing toward the dog.

"I think so?" Says Ellen hesitantly. "He was trying to defend a dead woman from raiders when I found him. I tried to patch him up a little and gave him a stimpak, but I don't know if it all helped."

"Poor thing," Annabelle says sympathetically. "I imagine the Stim-pack probably helped, but I'm no veterinarian...."

"I don't even know what that word means," Ellen admits. "Veterawhat, now?"

"Ellen!" The familiar voice from the rafters is followed by a small boy who drops down from them, stopping a bit away from the dog. "What happened this time...and...uhm."

...Wait.

Tyler's getting a thoughtful look.

"Oh- hi, Tyler," Ellen says. The dog whuffs tiredly. "I kind of got lost on the way home from- what is it?"

"I'm gonna try something..." The little boy grins as he crouches down to the dog's level and carefully with both hands to help push his ears around, makes a small whuff directed right at the dog.

"Hi! It's nice to meet you!"

He's not speaking the greatest canine, the lack of a tail makes the accent a little odd...

It's still infinitely better than anything any human being has offered the dog, ever. He splays his ears and lolls his tongue out in the canine equivalent of the broadest smile he can manage.

"Hi there! You can talk?"

Ellen? Just stares.
