An old man wanders up to the bar as the gentleman puts out the Specials board, hands stuffed deep in his pockets. He's wearing faded jeans, and a well-worn plaid flannel work shirt over a Virginia is for Lovers t-shirt.

He peers at the sign and eventually points with an amiable grin. "I sense a theme."

"There's amazing things about there, but there are no miracles."

Earl looks a bit gobsmacked. It's not a viewpoint he's unfamiliar with, nor is it quite as disturbing as someone who thinks even butterflies can be subversive, but it's one of those things about humans that he'll never understand.

"So, what would you consider to be a miracle? I mean, how would you define the very term 'miracle'?"

"Something incredible. It can be explained, but at least it's real. The Big Bang, the first cells that came together to form life. The fact out of all of the planets in the solar system, sustainable life is still rare on a planet."

Earl nods.

"Caterpillars turning into butterflies? Is that not a miracle?"

"It's definitely amazing. Something I liked to stress to my students. But it's a natural process."
