Naomi's on the mend; she's running around almost as usual, now, but she's more prone than usual to abrupt (and very cranky) bouts of tiredness. Wash and Zoe are, unsurprisingly, watching her with the eagle eyes of worried, protective parents who only have one toddler to mind. Simon stopped by yesterday evening, pronounced her nearly well, and ( Read more... )

...Someone below wearing a v. cool pair of sunglasses is staring up at the rafters in confusion, trying to work out what the fuzzy blob is.

It's a bird!

It's a plane!

It's... an oblivious crazy girl!

Oblivious for the moment, anyway, since a raspberry is apparently occupying all her attention. This may change shortly.

"Hello?" he ventures, wondering vaguely if he's just talking to a ceiling decoration.

"Not today," River says amiably to the raspberry, and then pops it in her mouth.

He saw the skirts first.

And by dint of stepping out from under the beam, is able to see their owner.

Castiel studies the odd sight, curiously.

It reminds him vaguely of the ancient Romans. Though they had preferred to lounge on couches while they ate.

Also, they had social norms on their side. Just saying.

River swallows a raspberry, and cocks her head to study Castiel back.

They could be at this a while.

Castiel can (and has) had staring contests with some of the best.

He does not mind them. But Milliways seems to be a place to talk rather than stare.

So after a few minutes (because he's not getting anywhere in trying to figure out why the girl is eating on the ceiling) he speaks.

"You can see farther from there?"

River blinks at him.

"It's a standard rotation of the binocular perspective."

Beat.

"I can see your hair."

"Any good?" Duo asks, peering up at her. You can never tell with fruit these days. Artificial 'seasons' contribute to odd 'seasons' for growing stuff.

"It's raspberries."

Duh, Duo!

"Well, okay, yeah. Any raspberry's a good raspberry when you've been in space for weeks."

He clasps his hands together behind his neck, supporting his head.

"You gonna come down, make me get a crick in my neck, or make me break my neck trying to get up there?"

River considers that. Cheerfully, and unhelpfully: "Yes."

She does, however, press her palms to the wood, and roll smoothly to sit astride the rafter instead.

It's a coincidence that makes Inara glance up at the rafters when she enters Milliways today. Her lips curve upward in a smile as she finds a spot where she can see River better.

"Nĭ hăo, mèimei."

"I found the fruit," River informs her, as if this is a great accomplishment.

She found them, for the record, at Bar. By asking for them. In the usual way.

"Excellent." Inara smiles up at her, brighter. "What kind of fruit?"

River holds up one in illustration.

If Inara is close enough, she'll see that it's a raspberry; otherwise, she'll see something small and red and probably-berryish. Of course, given Milliways, looks are sometimes misleading.
