It's difficult to spot Saffron unless you're looking for her. Or unless you're looking for no one in particular and happen to glance her way ( Read more... )

Jim is engrossed in Starfleet Intelligence reports and his coffee. Yes, he is aware that an attractive redhead is nearby, but somehow he really isn't taking note of her despite her looks.

"James T. Kirk. Native of Earth." He smiles back again, and at the same time feels a little old. He can't remember ever being that young right now.

"It's very nice to meet you, Captain Kirk."

Another part of that is true, because actually running into someone who doesn't hold a grudge against her? Equals a very good day for Saffron.

"So...what was your native world?" He wonders how much he should ask, but is quite sure that it's not his timeline and thus not a question of temporal law violation.

She rarely tells the truth. If she did, she'd be up front about it right away, and would therefore specify a planet which canon has never given.

Instead, she lies.

"It's a small, primitive border moon," she admits. "Called Triumph."

"I can't say I know it. But maybe it doesn't exist. Or maybe it hasn't been settled yet. And there are too many moons to keep track of, of course."

"Oh, I know I could never keep track of them all," she agrees, smiling sweetly.

"Besides, I've only ever been to about a handful of them. I bet you've travelled to a few more."

"It seems likely. That you travel at all is not common, at least in my time. They 60% of humans never leave the system of their birth." An anecdotal number, but one that Kirk believes.

"Oh, but I never would've gotten off Triumph in the first place if it hadn't been for a crew kind enough to take me on somewhere else."

Even if she did eventually try to steal their ship later and break it down for all its parts.

"As a passenger, or as crew?" Something seems a bit off here. He's not sure why, though he will admit that how civilians get from point A to point B is a mystery sometimes.

She pauses and laughs quietly.

"See, I sort of wound up marrying the captain. But... it didn't work out, so we parted ways."

"Ah. Yes, that can be...risky." It's fairly common for starship captains - indeed, for captains and commanders of all stripes - to stay unmarried.

It had been. Riskier for Mal, ironically.

"I suppose we just weren't meant to be after all."

"It happens," he says just a bit wearily.

"You're right."

She smiles, resting her chin in her palm.

"Besides, I never settle down. It'd be silly of me to make a committment."

"You're perhaps a bit young to say that, but I don't know if my own experiences are a good guide." No permanent commitments to women, but one doozy of a commitment to a career.
