Cal had set his son's autobiography aside for a while, but after recent events and regaining memories better left lost, he's been reading it again. It's comforting, knowing that at least one of the people he loved back home ended up happy, even if he couldn't be there to see it ( Read more... )

"Hi, Cal." Charlie is just back in from a jog.

Cal looks up from his book and smiles.

"Hey, Charlie. How've you been?"

"Not bad. Just watching the Bar go by, but also getting outside more. With a side trip to 1940s England. And yourself?" He takes a seat and orders a water.

"That sounds fun," Cal says. "I've been . . . all right, for the most part." No need to get too deeply into things. "Didn't I see you at X's party? I would have come over and said hi, but I didn't quite make it." He'd been busy. There are certain party-related ingrained instincts that never quite die when your family hosted countless gatherings and you always had certain duties to perform.

Dr. Song is walking through the bar with her nose deep in a comm pad, thumbing through the pages at a decent clip, her other hand holding a mug of tea.

That's probably why she doesn't see the seven foot tall fish creature until the last possible second, and in dancing out of his way while attempting to not spill hot tea all over Cal, she ends up sitting down in the chair next to him. Hard.

She gives him a sheepish grin. "So sorry about that."

At least she didn't spill her tea.

Cal laughs.

"That's all right. Saves me the trouble of inviting you to have a seat. You all right?"

"Yes, fine thank you." She sets her mug and comm pad down and rearranges herself on the chair with a slight wince. "Nothing too badly damaged, save for my ego. I'm River, River Song."

She holds out a hand in greeting.

"I know how that goes." Cal isn't usually too clumsy physically, but he's forever putting his foot in his mouth.

"Cal Chandler," he says, shaking her hand. "Nice to meet you, River. I like the name."

"Enzo!"

"It's okay," Cal says, a little on the evasive side. Enzo looks like he's in a good mood, and Cal doesn't want to wreck that with stories of suddenly remembering how he died. It's not something he'd go into much detail about with Enzo, anyway. "You?"

There is an Esfir next to him, one with sleeves rolled back and covered in the grease and marks of one messing about with engines.

But it's okay.

She won't say anything until he's finished the chapter.

Cal has never been, and may never be, the type who has any problems at all with being interrupted while he's reading. He'll know this book by heart soon, anyway, with the number of times he reads and rereads individual passages.

"Hey, Fira."

"Pryvet, Cal. Enjoying the book?"

Given the decided creases in the spine, and all...

"Yeah." He holds it up to show her the cover, which features a picture of a smiling middle-aged blond man. "Calvin's autobiography. This edition was published sixty years after I died. Isn't that weird?"

"Boo."

There is a Sam peering over his shoulder. It's also possible that there is at least one arm sliding around him.

Maybe two. These things happen.

"Hey, Favourite."

Cal looks up and grins, leaning back against Sam.

"Hey."

Sam smiles too. This isn't the most comfortable position in the world, but he can work with it for the moment.

"How're you doing?"

"I'm okay," Cal says, honestly enough.

Then, "I can see up your nose."

Some things really have to be said.
