"Is it going to be that canal work Ray was talking about?"

"Not a canal," he said with a shake of his head, "a tunnel. From Riva to the mainland. Too many things have gone wrong and we've been blind to it because of bad weather. There's a few other things, but we're thinking that it would solve quite a few problems all at once.
"If we can do it."
He leaned on one arm and ordered a burger and milkshake from a passing rat.
"And it's been a while for me as well. A few years, in fact."
