Steph is grumpy today because, in a completely rookie move, she didn't warm up properly before starting her training routine this morning, and managed to tear her left hamstring. StupidSo she's stuck inside today, with one thigh approximately twice the size of the other and some serious black-red-purple bruising at the back of her knee, and a pair ( Read more... )

Mel, from the rafters, is giving the crutches the eye.

The crutches do not eye back, being crutches.

Steph considers painting eyes on them for purposes of eyeing, but decides that would probably be overkill. Instead she pauses mid-phrase to tilt her head up and give Mel her own eye instead.

Mel can eye them both at the same time! Multitasking!

Steph has it easier. Her eyes only have to point one way.

She moves the crutches around to the side of the piano, to see if Mel will track them. It's like testing babies' vision!

Molly grins, hugging her.

"What's with the crutches?"

Today is a day for revelations:

Revelation number one is that a skilled player can make accompaniment for Rondo in C Major in a 10-string guitar.

Revelation number two is that said player is a certain plain common young man.

"Ooh, hey, not bad," Steph remarks, glancing over at the end of a phrase and lifting her hands from the keys. "I didn't know you played - it's Ben, isn't it?"

"Yeah. It's Tuesday, practice day." He nods. "Hi." Polite, but not enthusiastic. He still remembers what she said first time they met.

Steph does too, but hey, he started the conversation this time. She likes being on good terms with people anyway - it's just easier.

"I haven't practiced for a while," she admits, grinning ruefully, "as you could probably tell. But it's something to do while I can't move."

Teddy's watching from a table not far away, if only because it's a nice song, and he's curious.

[[The narration facepalms at the use of 'song' instead of 'piece'. Alas.]]

When Steph finishes, she sighs and slumps on the keyboard, with a jangle for each elbow's contact.

"I could play it again but I think I might go out of my mind," she mutters, turning to grin wryly at her watcher.

Teddy laughs. "Practice makes perfect, though, doesn't it?"

"Yes," Steph complains, turning to look Very Very Pained - even though she's obviously amused. "But it's turning my brain into mush. Sparkly, piano-key mush. Piano-key soup maybe. Do you think people can survive with piano-key soup for brains?"
