Whistler is pretty good at seemingly minding his own business. It goes with the territory. Phone phreaks are usually pretty good at running below the radar when they're not in the process of making Ma Bell and all her successors cry like someone's given them a face full of cut onions. Charlie watches the blind man reading the Braille sheets. It's fascinating to see something so tactile at work. He wonders if Richard (a man who pretended to be wheelchair-bound for a year just to see what it's like) learned Braille just to see if hands that could kill could also read.

"Morning," says Whistler, lifting his head and turning in the approximate direction of the voice. It's hard to triangulate from just two words, even with his ears. "How's it going?"

"Not badly. Cold outside and a bit icy today. The same as always in here." He assumes that the one thing a blind man not dressed for outside might not know is the weather.
