As comforting as the very small room Ellen acquired upstairs is, she knows full well that she's got to get used to dealing with strangers if she's going to have any luck in finding her father once she leaves. Thus, the young woman in the blue and gold jumpsuit with '101' across the back is settled in at one of the tables, sewing up numerous rents ( Read more... )

Yeah so I suck at this 'hiatus' thing.

Steve notices the sign before he notices the girl, and pauses in front of the table to read it.

"And how many people are in your Vault?" He doesn't mean for it to sound like an interrogation; this is just the way he thinks.

"A few hundred," says Ellen. "There were a thousand in the beginning, but there've been accidents over time, and the birth rate isn't always up to a full replacement rate."

Her father was the Vault's only physician until Jonas Palmer finished his training. Ellen got a lot of her early education from reading Dad's notes.

"Jesus." That's really all he can say.

Ellen gives a very small smile as she notes, "For what it's worth, there's people on the surface... somewhere, anyway. I found some notes in our Overseer's terminal when I was making my escape, and there's definitely at least a town out there somewhere close enough to reach from the Vault itself. I just haven't found my way to Megaton yet."

Springvale doesn't count.

"But you're working on it?" He asks, thoughtfully.

"Haven't got much of a choice, really," Ellen says. "I don't know why my father left, and Megaton's the only lead I have. This-" She nods at the needlework she's doing. "Is to earn enough bottlecaps to pay for my stay here, plus some extra supplies to get me to Megaton and find out what's going on."

"You use bottlecaps as currency?" That sounds practical, actually, if they haven't got the resources to coin other metal.

"The surface folks do. We mostly operated on ration coupons and barter in the Vault. Pre-war money wound up not meaning a whole lot," Ellen says. "I'm doing my best to match my prices with how much work I'd have to do to earn extra meal tickets back home, since I don't know how much the caps are worth anywhere else."

"They're completely worthless. A pound of them would maybe be a couple of cents for recylcing..." he rubs the back of his neck. "To be honest, ma'am, I'd feel guilty paying you in them when I could just save them for you for free."

"I wouldn't ask you to do anything against your conscience," Ellen says. "If you really don't feel right in using them, we can probably arrange something based on what someone would be paid in whatever money you use where you come from for the same sort of work I'd do. I can use that to pay for my room and board here if I have to, and any caps I can come by I'll just bring with me to Megaton when I go."

"Tell you what: I'll pay into your tab until the work's done, and save up any caps I find. Not that I drink much with them."

"All right," says Ellen. "That sounds fair. Thank you, Mr.... um. I don't think I got your name, did I?"

He smiles sheepishly.

"Rogers. Steve Rogers."
