The door to the lake opens, and Kate comes in through it, rubbing her hands together for a moment before she starts peeling those gloves off.

It's cold. If it's not the coldest she's ever been, it's still colder than she's been in a long time ( Read more... )

Will's on another one of the couches with a mug of mulled wine and looking like he's not quite there due to lack of sleep and something else that makes him look too old. He looks up for a moment when she sits down and gives a small nod.

Catching his eye, she smiles a little after he nods.

"Hey."

It looks like he's had a long night or two, and she thinks he's definitely got the right idea in setting up camp on one of these couches.

"Eve, milady. Still too bloody cold out there?"

He manages a bit of a smile, it works better when he's had more sleep.

The milady gives her pause, and visibly so. But she recovers with a slightly wider smile and gives him a nod of her own for confirmation.

"Yep. Colder than I like it," she admits, "but sometimes you've just got to get out, right?"

Riley's wearing headphones. They're new, and he's giving them a shot; they're big and sleek and expensive, noise-canceling, and he's trying to decide whether he likes them better than his old favorites, which were equally big, but less sleek and expensive and noise-canceling, and more broken-in.

He has his laptop (here's a surprise: it's sleek and black and expensive, and the current woman in his life) under his arm, headphones plugged into it, and his glasses tucked into the collar of his sweater. He heads for his usual spot by the fire-- And there's someone there.

He thinks.

There is a person-shaped blur on the couch, anyway.

He shoots a blind half-smile in its general direction (polite enough, but it STOLE his favorite SPOT), and takes an armchair.

For a second she thinks that she's getting company right here on the couch with her, but the guy kind of stops and veers over to a chair just when it's looking inevitable.

She smiles back and physically draws herself in a little, pulling her arm in where it was draped over the back of the couch and curling both hands around her coffee mug.

Her feet stay propped on the table, though.

"I'm not in your spot, am--"

She cuts herself off abruptly and presses her lips together in another smile, realizing he's not likely to hear a word she's saying.

Riley's a little deaf and blind, here, but the person-blur moved, and that's enough to cause him to glance up in the middle of opening his laptop and, after a second's deliberation, put his glasses on, and.

Whoa.

Oh.

Whoa.

And to think he ever referred to Abigail as hot.

"Sorry--" he says, and then he realizes abruptly that his voice is muffled and weird, and he yanks a headphone off one ear, leaving them to dangle haphazard and crazy.

He tries very hard not to pull a self-deprecating face. (Hint: he fails.)

"--Sorry -- did you say something?"

At first she smiles again, but by the time he uncovers one ear, she's grinning.

...and then when he makes that face, she lets out a laugh in spite of herself.

"No," she says automatically, shaking her head, "nothing important. I was just asking if I'd taken your spot."

He'd seemed pretty intent on the couch at first, from what she saw.
