"Oh, come on."

Jacen rolls his eyes under the helmet he's acquired, and pokes Bar with a black-gloved finger.

"And with the vocoder? Even you can be more subtle than this."

He tries to tug off the helmet.

No dice, Solo.

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

Jacen groans.

It comes out as a rather fierce-sounding growl, which makes him roll his eyes again.

"Father. How young and dashing you look today."

"...please tell me you're in one of these stupid costumes and not another one of my kids come to surprise me."

"Two for two," Jacen says, tugging at the helmet again.

Blasted thing must be glued or something.

"You're ... hmm. Not even forty yet. ... Should have picked up on that sooner and avoided spoiling you."

The last part was supposed to be muttered under his breath. Vocoders do not really lend themselves to muttering.

Esfir, still at her table (and still dressed up), looks up.

The voice is...attention-grabing.

As is the cape.

And the mask.

And.

Everything.

She'll say something in a moment. Honest.

Jacen tilts his head at the familiar presence. He tries to glance sideways to confirm who it is, but the mask doesn't offer much in the way of peripheral vision.

How did Vader fight in this?

He turns all the way to look at Esfir, sees what she's wearing, and clears his throat.

"...Bar is fond of her little jokes."

"She is," the tiny woman agrees.

Beat.

"How can you see with that...mask being a blinker?"

"It's difficult," Jacen admits. "Undoubtedly designed by the Emperor himself. I suppose my grandfather relied rather more heavily on the Force than his vision."

He frowns under the mask and tilts his head again.

"Which is difficult in this place at the best of times, never mind when it's as crowded as tonight."

Steph is staring, delighted.

THAT IS AWESOME.

Of course, Bar being subtle and all, Steph is a giant cheese cube today.

Jacen has always been wary of giant sentient cheese cubes.

:|

He's keeping an eye on you, Steph.

This could be a Corellian conspiracy.

"Oh, come on, it's not my fault!" Steph pirouettes for him. Cubishly.

It's not Darth Vader. She can tell before he says anything...because he feels like Daddy.

She can't move, she's rooted to the spot, watching him struggle with the helmet.

The helmet is definitely not coming off. Bar and her blasted sense of humour. Probably Corellian.

Jacen turns when he realises Allana is there, and though his face is hidden, he brightens noticeably in the Force.

"Chume'da," he greets politely. "Don't be afraid -- I'm Jedi Jacen, not the real Darth Vader.

"--what have they done to your hair?"

It's a bunch of little things in his stance and what he says(his happiness at seeing her, being 'Jedi Jacen' and not 'Daddy') that make her realize...it's not the same. She's a smart girl. She knows when things don't match up.

"I think we're from a different time." Her voice is soft as she stares back up at the menacing form.

Jacen kneels, making an effort to be more on her level, and frowns thoughtfully under the mask.

He's quiet for a moment, reaching out through the Force, and then he nods gravely. Something is different. Most importantly, there's a sadness about her that he can't quite understand.

"I think we are," he agrees, in as much of a murmur as the vocoder allows. "Better not spoil the future for me, hmm?"

(He doesn't need her to, after all. He'll be meditating on this as soon as he gets back.)
