The blonde who flounces into the bar - flounces would be as good a word as any to describe the way in which she throws herself into a chair, glaring at nothing in particular - is, in a word, annoyed"Can I have a drink, Bar? Please?" she asks, trying to throw a little extra affection into her voice on the hopes that she'll get something good ( Read more... )

Barney wanders down to the bar to grab some dinner, but instead spots Izzie looking pretty upset, even given how they met.

He's got a smile on his face by the time he walks over, even though he's a little concerned. "Hey, Izzie? You okay?"

[[OOC: Heading to bed, but wanted to tag before I did so. Hope that's okay!]]

"I'd hope not, anyway," he says, eating a spoonful of soup after waiting for it to cool down. Then he notices her playing with her umbrella.

"Was that a Cosmo or something?"

"It was. I wanted something stronger, but you know Bar's humor. She gave me this. I think she was trying to tell me I don't need to get drunk tonight.

"Besides, alcohol plus Izzie can sometimes equal very poor judgment."

"Ahh. I knew a few people like that, back in the day. I don't usually ever drink any more than 2 beers if I'm drinkin'--it's not worth the hangover to me."

"See, you'd think that being a doctor, and knowing my history with drinks, I'd learn when to quit."

She smiles to herself.

"I guess I just get stressed out, and right now, alcohol's one of the more convenient ways to relieve the tension."

"Well, people have to have something to relieve stress. It's much better than my physics doctor friend--he declawed a zombifying alien for a pet. Anything after that? Is completely normal, in my book. Though I think she causes more stress than she relieves, to be honest."

"Wow. Okay, no aliens for me, thanks." Izzie chuckles.

"For a while, my way of dealing with stress was completely inappropriate sex. But then one of my friends and I took up knitting in place of that. I actually made a pretty good sweater. And then... I kind of fell off the knitting bandwagon again."

"I kind of went through that, in high school. The eighties," he says by way of explanation. "But, um. Then I met..." A quick look flashes across his face before he switches the topic.

"So what do you do instead of knitting?"

"Instead of knitting? Well, this, for starters," she says, pointing to her now-empty glass.

"And if I said the inappropriate sex wasn't still going on every now and then, I'd be lying."

"Well, there's no sex where I'm from, so I have no ground to even say anything about that," Barney says with a shrug.

"You, Izzie, need a hobby. You're in Milliways--there's got to be something you can learn that's not booze, right?"

"Something that's not performing surgery, baking or knitting, you mean?" Izzie grins slightly.

"Those seem to be the three things that could be categorized as 'hobbies'."

"You just admitted you don't knit that much anymore. So that doesn't count. Baking, though. That's good, that'll work," he grins. "Not sure about the surgery. I really doubt you go in and ask 'Got any surgeries I can perform?' when you're off-duty." God knows he wouldn't.

"Knitting doesn't count? Damn." She snaps her fingers. "I do bake, though. I make a mean batch of muffins.

"And you'd be surprised. Sometimes when there's nothing to do, I kind of sit at home and pray that my pager goes off."

"Do any reading?" He has a really hard time believing that Izzie has all that around her that she could do, and she doesn't make use of it. "Or do you just enjoy surgery that much?"

"You know, I probably should do more of that - and something that isn't in a medical journal."

Izzie pauses, shrugging slightly. "Everything's so competitive at the hospital right now, it's hard to distance myself from it."

"Probably, yeah," he grins. "What do you mean, competitive?"
