"Well, I mean--"

He crouches slightly to peer at the candles from their level, then looks sideways at Shalla.

"They're pretty tiny, even with thirty-- uh, thirty of them. As long as no one does something stupid like try to burn a napkin with them..."

Shalla debates her duty to Milliways as a whole, then sighs and pushes herself from her seat to walk over.

"Let's not give them a chance, then."

Oh, look, did those candles just get blown out?

"Is thirty-five honestly so old that you forgot how to count?"

Inyri comes up behind him and rests her chin on his shoulder. "You're gettin' old, Janson."

She kisses his cheek and acts like she hasn't said that since waking up this morning. "Happy Lifeday."

"Only if you believe the numbers," he says with a rueful smile, and tilts his head to peer at her.

"Thanks. Again."

"The numbers never lie." She grins, coming around to sit next to him. "Blow out your gajillion candles, old man."

He gives her a wry look. "You really wanna call me old man?"

He does as he's told, though, and blows out all gajillion thirty-five candles.

... it takes him three goes.
