Duo's at a table, one arm over the back of his chair, legs stretched out under the table. Set on the tabletop is a palm sized computer. Every now and then he taps at the small keyboard sticking out of the side, but most of his concentration is on the projection hovering above it ( Read more... )

X slips closer, peering at the image.

"It is still making you sick?"

Where did she come from?

"Not for now. I had a hack at it, got it to respond to a different signal. It's not perfect, but as long as I have this with me," he gestures to the computer, "I should be able to manage."

Duo glances at her, then back at the screen. "How 'bout you?"

X shrugs a little, shoulders tense.

This new Duo confuses her.

"I am okay."

Beat.

"No one is dead."

"Always a plus." His tone is dry. "But hey, I've never better, right now. Have a seat if you want. I might not be an interesting conversationalist, but it's not like you care too much, right?"

"Now that," Heero says, surprise in his voice, "Is rather interesting."

And looks somewhat familiar, if his memory is correct.

And his memory is always correct.

Duo slaps the computer shut with one hand. He's gotten out of practice at identifying Heero's approach by his steps. Sitting up straight now, he eyes Heero warily.

"Yeah?"

"Yes," Heero says, and reachs for it. "Let me see."

No-nonsense tone!

"Oh, no." He snatches it off the table and holds it (hopefully) out of Heero's reach. "I know exactly what would happen if I give you this. You'd vanish into it, and no one would ever see you again. Plus, you'd inv- you'd get ahead of the tech market. The ATMs can't take it."

K squints a bit as he studies the projection. He might even be nodding slightly. The Man in Black approves: that's some fine image resolution on that display.

The intriguing thing is, K isn't actually sure what that circuitry might be for.

As for how long he's been standing there, silently looking over Duo's shoulder, who can say?

"Upgrade?"

"Not for me. I've had it for a year, but it's more than a little ahead of the curve, back home. Just starting to spread out from government and big business, you know? This was the prototype."

He looks away from the screen long enough to nod at K. "How's it going?"

"Good, good," K replies, still half-distracted by the tech.

He nods at the circuitry in the display. "What's the story here?"

"Ahhh. Welcome to the mostly illegal and highly misrepresented area of fugitive tracking technology. Fun times for the whole family, if the whole family likes to get their inner ear fucked up when this baby can't contact its satellite."

His tone is very dry.
