Sunday Night Bartending.

Nov 25, 2007 17:42

Specials:

Anyone who has had a birthday in November drinks half-off. Prove it, though.

There's really not enough birthday celebrations around Milliways, sometimes.

[ooc: slowtime or fade; your choice. :-* Thanks to all who tagged.]

"Unfortunately I can't honestly say that I have," says Ray, all but skidding up to the Bar, "but I could use a drink anyway. This is my third day back from 1931. Hi, um... Mal, right? Mal Reynolds? It's been a while."

"Great," says Ray with a smile. "Thank you. I really appreciate it- the only Chinese I can remember is [Are you absolutely certain you want us to remove the spirit of your dead uncle from the bathroom? We can't put him back if you change your mind,], and I'm not entirely sure I'm getting that right."

Mal tilts his head to one side.

"There's ways to pronounce that that's more fluid, but you're correct.

"Do I even want to know why you can say that?"

"Mal, what do I do for a living? In my own reality, I mean."

"You actually remember? Didn't remember me at the beginning o' this conversation."

"In light of the fact that I did it every day for years on end and that three quarters of the books upstairs in my room are dedicated to the subject, I have reason to remember. I might've been away from- oh. Oh. Oh God. I don't think I ever told you- Mal, I'm sorry, but when I said 'a while' I meant 'twenty five years since I last set foot in Milliways, preceded by forty-seven years in Garion's world'. Earth years, not something ridiculous and easy like the year on Mercury, either."

Mal leans in as close as humanly possible toward Ray without climbing over the bar.

"How are you alive?"

"My goddaughter, Beldaran, made a bargain with two of the gods of her world," Ray says ruefully. "I no longer seem to be aging, getting sick, or vulnerable to poison or gunshot. I mean, I'll still bleed, but unless the shot blows my head off? I get up again. Which, while a very thoughtful present on Beldaran's part, is something I wish she'd warned me about first."

Mal raises his hand.

"Can I meet Beldaran? Seems like a useful lady to do favors for."

"Sure. Next time I see Garion I'll ask him if I can bring her around. She's about six years old right now. Apparently, coming from a six year old, an offer of a pony and an Erastide present to be named later counts for a lot with the gods."

At the mention of the pony, Mal lifts up a pony and a plastic rocket.

"How's a miniature one work?"

".... probably better if you were actually a six year old girl."

"Fair enough."

Away goes the pony and the plastic rocket. It's too confusing to contemplate while Mal has a job to do.

"In the mood for any more normal?" Mal asks. "Shift's over in a spell, and one of the pool tables is free."

"Pool is good," Ray says. "The students at Miskatonic were big on football. I'd rather stay inside and hit things with sticks any day."

Mal wrinkles his nose. "Pool it is. Until then -- refill?"

"Wouldn't say no," Ray says. "On the bright side, I've had a lot of time to work on my sword techniques. The Miskatonic athletics department has some really good fencing instructors, and an hour or two a day for twenty-five years will improve anyone's technique."
