Thursday Night 'Tending

Nov 15, 2007 18:45

Once a long time ago, when Tom first came to Milliways, Bar would only give him lukewarm tea and not the finest quality of scotch. However, that time is long past, Bar gives him the best, and Tom is quite fond of both her and the people who tend her ( Read more... )

The narration feels bound to point out that Bar, when properly functional, is no longer Bound to someone who dislikes Tom on principle.
Not that Larry knows anything about that. He just knows that if Lewis and Clark don't stop arguing over how to map the museum and actually do something to that end soon, he's likely to knock their heads together-- and hey, here's that bar again. With somebody actually tending, no less.
So he heads over and says, "Just some hot chocolate would be great, please."

Larry shakes his head, grinning. "Not that I don't appreciate the offer, but the job's hard enough when I'm sober. Don't really want to see how it'd go drunk. Besides, I'd never hear the end of it - and that'd be before anyone with a stake in my job security showed up."
The worst of it, though, would be what would happen if his son heard.

"Too true. I avoid drinking on the job as well."

Well, aside from a glass of scotch or wine with state dinners.

"What do you do?"
There aren't usually bartenders here, after all. And in general, Milliways isn't a place where you make assumptions.

"I'm a- I suppose I'm a diplomat of sorts. I'm Lord of the House of Arch in London Below."

Larry considers that.
And some more.
...Wait for it...
"...Okay, I clearly don't have the right mental image here. You've gotta be dealing with more than just the subway, if there's enough people to merit titles."

"There is a subway. A few of them, actually, including one that no one dares to ride. But for the most part, London Below consists of that which has been forgotten. Along with the people who fell through the cracks from London Above."

"..........huh. Sort of a permanently-live-action museum?"
Except not really at all. But it's not a bad working definition, given Larry's main frame of reference.

(OOC: Sure! Not sure how much I'll be around tomorrow, but that's why slowtime was invented. XD)

No, actually that's quite a good example.

"Sort of, yes. I've seen more of my city's history wandering around the Underside than in any museum."

"Cool."
And for all it sounds like it could get... intense, it does sound cool.

"It is, rather. I like it very much."

Now, anyway. The lack of hygiene for most of the residents took a bit of getting used to.
