That palpable irritation?

It's coming from the woman who's just walked through the door, the woman dressed all in red and holding what looks like some sort of complex mechanism ( Read more... )

The Doctor is in his TARDIS when he feels the odd itching in the back of his mind. He's come to expect it while he was here -- Ace and Romana are frequent visitors, after all -- but this one is different, while at the same time being all too familiar.

He takes the short walk from the TARDIS to the back door of Milliways and steps inside. His eyes land on her almost instantly, and he just crosses his arms and leans back against the door frame.

Figures that she'd find her way her eventually.

She looks up to meet his gaze, having felt the eyes on her (hypertensed as she was) and the expression of irritation on her face metamorphoses to one of resignation with almost, perhaps, a faint hint of amusement.

"Returning the favor, Doctor?" she asks as she walks over, her stride purposeful and her head held high.

"Oh, this has nothing to do with me," he responds with a trace of amusement. "Though I almost wish it did. But instead, I'm forced to merely witness the event."

Then, with a much larger and much falser grin, he adds, "Welcome to Milliways."

Her nostrils flair and her eyes widen. Consider that a small victory, Doctor.

It seems almost as if she wants to argue it, or ask if that could really be so, but instead she straightens her spine and peers at him curiously.

"I was unaware that it was located inside of a space vessel."

As if to break the woman from her transfixed state, there is a sudden and abrupt nudge against her foot. There is a tiny green being pushing a softball-sized ball of... well, stuff. Gum wrappers, pocket lint, a few buttons.

"Oh!"

She looks down.

And, without a word, demands both an apology and an explanation. For everything.

The wee being looks up. "Pardon me, ma'am!" He pushes the little ball about, scooping up some of the detritus that was broken loose on impact. "I was not trying to roll you up!" He DOES sound apologetic.

"I should think not," she replied, her tone harsh but not as harsh as it could be. He had apologized, after all. "Be more careful in the future."

What looks like a cat sitting on the nearest table to the door is peering at the complex mechanism in her hands.

Do excuse his curiosity.

As tense as she is, she notices even the eyes of a cat... and looks right back at it.

Questioningly.

Yes? she almost seems to ask even as her hand shifted to place the temporal circuitry behind her.

The not'cat fails to blink.

"Excuse me. What might that device be, if you don't mind me asking?" And even if she does, really, because he's already asked.

"I do mind," she informs him, cool if not as irritated as she'd been. Despite her incident with the Lord President's animal, she holds no dislike for cats. On the contrary: they were decent enough creatures and like herself in some respects.

"It's incomplete."

Mostly because of a lack of parts.
