You know how there's all sorts of movies with pirates plugging scurvy dogs through the heart or the head or whatever despite only having one eye? Or sword-fighting like Errol Flynn at his finest without so much as disturbing their eyepatch ( Read more... )

At some point, he may notice a familiar smell of distant fires and rotten metal. If and when he turns to look, he'll see that the man in the gray suit, leaning against one of the nearby trees, does indeed have his arms folded as shown, but he looks sympathetic, not sulky.

Oh, he picks up the smell soon enough. The gun he's using is matt black, soundless and scentless no matter what ammunition he loads it with- a gift from a friend. It's only a matter of the wind shifting around right before he notices.

"Donighal," he offers by way of greeting. "I hear we owe you a debt of gratitude."

Michael bows. "Your man Greene certainly does. Andrew successfully gold-dusted the lesser Cybermen, but the Cyber Leader - at least, I assume that's what he was - seems to've been insulated against that sort of thing, so I had to induce spontaneous combustion."

Wells grunts. "Black handles?" he asks, indicating the space around his head. "That's what got me. Only one out of a hundred and fifty that I know of that didn't go down when I hit him with the gold suspension. I'd've paid to see one of 'em burn, frankly."

Should Kira be approaching from the hurt side? Or the blind side? How does the wind factor in? She does not know, but it's not a good idea to make people with guns feel on edge. So: "Hi!"

. . . not that she was silently approaching anyway. And she smells like Kira, like plants, like incense, and like brownies.

"I haven't seen you in a long time." She's debating are you all right? and settling for a concerned look instead.

Wells gives up on trying to shoot for the moment and lowers his gun. "Yeah, we've been busy in our worlds," he says. "Hallo, Kira."

He comes very close to trying to rub his eye bandages, but drops his hand before he makes contact.

"Uh. Busy? Like, souls are at risk busy?" Kira is not yet close enough to try blocking him. "What happened?"

"A scientist discovered how to take people's brains and stick 'em in robot bodies with the emotions turned off so they'd make an unstoppable army," says Wells. "They had lasers."

That, he feels, should be self-explanatory.
