The sign catches Axel's eye as he's walking by, and he pauses to read it again.

"Okay," he says after a moment. "I'm not really interested in signing up, but I am curious."

"They occur naturally in a lot of worlds. Maybe in every world. Anywhere a person can lose their heart to darkness," Axel says.

Rand digests that thought for a few moments.

"Perhaps they are not as different from what I have encountered after all."

"Ordinary people can't kill them," Axel elaborates. "They're only fodder."

"Then I am sorry for them. The Shadowspawn in our world can be killed by anyone. Not easily, by any accounts, but a blade through the body will stop them in their tracks."

"You're lucky then," Axel says. "Most worlds aren't so fortunate. If that's the case, either you have a world full of special people, or your Shadowspawn aren't the same as Heartless."
