At some point, Jim Kirk goes outside, sees Emma, and heads over. He doesn't look quite as chipper as usual.

"Good morning, Captain." The greeting is only halfway out of my mouth before I suspect that for him, it may not be such a good morning after all. The duck-things don't seem to care: after regarding him curiously for a moment, two of the more adventurous ones waddle up to him, quacking a demand to be fed. As far as they're concerned, if one human in the immediate vicinity has food, it stands to reason that the other will, too.

I tear off a large piece of the loaf and pass it to him. "Here. You'd best appease the ducks - whatever they are - or you may have a riot on your hands." Being occupied with the duck-things might also improve his mood a little.

"What are those?" Jim takes the bread and considers both the ducklike beings and the bread, and then rips off a little. "I take it they like bread?"

"I don't know what they are," I say. "They're mostly duck, though." I tear off a morsel of my own bread and toss it. One of the ducks snatches it out of the air.
