It's not always obvious to people who cant' see past the red metal blade of demonic death stuck on Mel's back, but this Slayer and thief carries and uses two weapons. That one, and the big red zap gun that deals with problems in a considerably less terminal way ( Read more... )

Katara, most people know, has only one weapon, carried in a leather sling with a strap over her chest. It's generally obvious, from her demeanor and the way she carries herself, that Waterbending is the only way she knows to defend herself.

It doesn't explain why she's stomping back into the bar from the lake with her hands fisted tightly at her sides. It's still chill outside, but the Waterbender seems comfortable in her linen wraps.

Or maybe it's the glaring death in her eyes that's keeping her warm.

"Mel? Mel, hey, uhm." There's less death in her gaze when she's looking at the older woman, worry taking over her anger and frustration. "Do you know where Steph is?"

"In our room, probably," Mel says, unconcerned. "I dunno, I haven't been up there today yet. You OK?"

She knows the answer, but doesn't stop looking after her gun.

"She moved in with you?" She's supposed to be Steph's best friend, she should know all this, oh no, what if she screwed up the same way Zuko always did and she hurt Steph and didn't even stick around to see the results?

"...no," Katara says unnecessarily, looking like she's on the verge of crying, screaming, or both. "No, I'm-- oh, Mel, what room is it? I really, really need to talk to her."

"132," Mel says, but frowns and puts out a oil-stained hand to sto pher from going up there right now. "She's probably asleep. What is it?"
