Charlie, wandering around with his guitar, spies the reading girl and pauses a moment.

He grins and sings, accompanying himself on guitar,

And I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

Chapter One we didn't really get along
Chapter Two I think I fell in love with you
You said you'd stand by me in the middle of Chapter Three
But you were up to your old tricks in Chapters Four, Five and Six

And I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

"Hi," he says. "Whatcha reading?"

Angela looks up and smiles. "Hey. I'm reading Watership Down. Read it dozens of times, but it's my favorite comfort book."

She glances over at the guitar. "Nice singing, by the way."

"Thank you," he says with a bow over the guitar.

"I'm Charlie."

"I'm Angela. From Los Angeles, hi." She sits up and reaches over to shake his hand.

"How long have you been coming here?"

"Hi."

"Hi, Dr. Crowe," Angela says cheerfully. She peers at him, her smile fading to an expression of concern. "Are you okay?"

Malcolm hesitates just enough to confirm that he might not be. But he nods anyway. "I'm all right. Just been having some late nights. How are you?"

"I'm okay." She doesn't really believe that Malcolm's telling her the whole truth, but he's also an adult and there's not much she can say about that.

"The bar pulled me in from the beach. I had to ask her for a towel and a change of clothes."
