James is what we'll call restlessHe may not look it, as he's staring directly out the Observation Window without moving a muscle, but then staring at a perpetually moving light display is one of the last refuges of boredom, isn't it? So he's at the table by the Observation Window, the one he hasn't sat in for a while, the one he used to smoke at ( Read more... )

"As lovely as the view is outside, there are so many better things you can be doing with your time right now."

Sarah Jane plops into a seat across from him, notebook and Say True issue in hand.

"I come and go as I please," she continues, shaking her head. "Why can't you?"

"Because I've only walked in here once. I'm not sure if I'll have the chance to again."

Translation: James Bond is an eternal fucking pessimist.

"But you--

--you have to, James."

It's daft really, because Sarah knows that they're nothing official. It's just...well, it's something (what she still doesn't know), but she doesn't want it to go away quite yet.

And especially not without that date he promised.

He squeezes her hand. "I'll do my best."

But if he can't find a door, or if he dies before he can return--well. What happens will happen.

"You better," Sarah says harshly, almost scolding him. She's trying her best to cover up the tears in her eyes.

When she had suggested he go back, all of whatever minutes ago, she hadn't realized he might not be able to get back here to Milliways.

To her.

And that thought surprisingly hurts.

He grins weakly at her, keeping his hand wrapped around hers.

"Let's have enough of this dreadful talk--I'll buy you a drink. How does that sound?"

Sarah shrugs, her mind still preocuppied with the previous conversation.

"I guess."

James frowns, stands, and moves to a chair next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders to pull her into a hug.

And, this time, the tears do come as she hides her head in the crook of his nec.

He better come back. He has to.

He can’t make any promises, but he knows he wants to come back. He’s gained here something he lost outside, and so much more. Only a fool would want to give that up. He’s just so used to losing the good things as soon as they come, so he has no expectations that he’ll see Milliways again. No expectations he’ll ever see Sarah again.

And it frightens him as much as it’s hurting Sarah.

James wraps his other arm around Sarah, planting small kisses onto her hair, hoping that whoever’s inclined to listen to will hear his request for this not to be the last time he’ll ever be with Sarah.

Once again, Sarah Jane is reminded of why she's never tried for a relationship since Andrew.

Because when things like this happens, it winds up hurting in ways you never expected, because even if you don't quite love the other person yet, you care. You care and eventually all that caring just hurts when you wind up in situations like this.

So, Sarah buries her face further into her neck, letting the tears flow. She's never been good at hiding her emotions anyway.

Wasn’t she the one who told him it was okay to cry?

James is content to stay here for as long as she needs to cry. She did as much for him, once. He’ll do the same for her, without limit. Trying to comfort her more, he lifts a hand and smoothes her hair, still planting the occasional kiss.

After minutes of crying into his shoulder, Sarah finally looks upward. She rubs at her blotchy face, and tries to smile.

It doesn't work.

"Oh James, please come back."

He kisses her softly on the lips, discomfort with Public Displays of Affection be damned.

“You like me that much?” he jests in a quiet voice, grinning slightly.
