It's daft really, because Sarah knows that they're nothing official. It's just...well, it's something (what she still doesn't know), but she doesn't want it to go away quite yet.
And especially not without that date he promised.

And it frightens him as much as it’s hurting Sarah.
James wraps his other arm around Sarah, planting small kisses onto her hair, hoping that whoever’s inclined to listen to will hear his request for this not to be the last time he’ll ever be with Sarah.

Because when things like this happens, it winds up hurting in ways you never expected, because even if you don't quite love the other person yet, you care. You care and eventually all that caring just hurts when you wind up in situations like this.
So, Sarah buries her face further into her neck, letting the tears flow. She's never been good at hiding her emotions anyway.

James is content to stay here for as long as she needs to cry. She did as much for him, once. He’ll do the same for her, without limit. Trying to comfort her more, he lifts a hand and smoothes her hair, still planting the occasional kiss.
