He had received a coat when he first came to Milliways. Soon after, Renfield started receiving other things- more clothing (to replace those bloody rags he came in wearing), more paper, pencils in various colours, and some new reading glasses ( Read more... )

The extent of Milo's German is 'ja,' 'nein,' 'auf wiedersehen' and 'schadenfreude,' but he's trying to read the spine of the book anyway, because he's nosy.

"Is that the Metamorphosis?"

"Hmmm." Milo thinks.

"So...he's turned into a thing that modern people think is disgusting, but if he'd just been born in a different era, he would have been worshipped?"

"In your country and mine, witchcraft is something that is feared as Satanic, but many of the same rituals performed by witches were performed by high priests of many ancient cultures."

Renfield notes all of this down. "It seems to come in cycles."

As far as Milo's concerned, witchcraft is fine and dandy, if a bit stupid in some of its permutations.

"I think it's facing a bit of a revival," he muses. "Mostly with teenage girls."

"Teenage girls?" Girls- okay. Teen- not so much with the lingo. "What does 'teen' mean?"

"Like--school-age girls? 13 to 19, that age. You've heard of the Salem Witch Trials, right?"

Milo's got a teenage sister who thinks 'The Craft' was the greatest movie of all time.

"Oh! Well, yes, that I understand- age, certainly." He nods.

"Yes- of course! They were fascinating to read about."

"Yeah, I know, it was great getting to study all the gruesome stuff in history class." He grins.

"Anyway, nowadays, you see a lot of teenage girls calling themselves witches, but they're not really serious about it...I mean, I tried it for a summer once when I was a kid, but it was just temporary."

Milo opts not to go into detail about his experimentations with teenage paganism, since they'd involved more bizarre piercings and hair colors than actual religion.

Renfield's not gonna ask. "I don't think there is much about paganism in this novel."

"Um, probably not," he agrees, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Anyway. Sorry for...talking your ear off." He laughs sheepishly.

"It is not taking anything away from me, your talking!" Renfield grins easily at Milo. "I just wish I had my journal with me-" a fresh journal appears on Bar's top.

"Oh! Well, yes, thank you, My Lady."

Milo stares.

"...it's gonna take me a while to get used to that," he remarks.

"I just got here yesterday. I thought I was dead."

"Oh? Why did you think you were dead?" Yes, that's the subject Renfield decides to pounce on.

And for added fun- he asks that like he's asking Milo what he likes to eat for lunch.

"Well, I didn't know how I'd gotten here, and stuff was magically appearing all over the place, and then there's that...window."

He gives the observation window a quick glance and turns away, because it's scary.

"It just seemed kinda like the first logical explanation, but I couldn't remember dying or getting hurt."

"I was confused as well- I believed this to be Heaven, but was quickly told that that is not the case." He traces a finger over his writing.

"I have been collecting data since then."

"So you're stuck here, then?"

Milo is a little slow on the uptake sometimes. One wonders how Chloe doesn't smack him.
