Hmmmm. I wonder what day it could be. What day could possibly have put Puck in such a generally amused frame of mind?

I wonder.

At any rate, Puck is lying on his back on one of the tables, eyeing the upside-down comings and goings of the patrons with lazy, amiable curiosity.

He is always willing to accept gifts of chocolate.

Will finds Puck's current position highly amusing. Or, at the very least, interesting.

That is probably why he's standing near the table looking down at Puck with raised eyebrows, and why Kirjava has leapt onto a chair at the same table. "Searching for a new perspective?" he asks.

"Oh, I don't think so," Puck says reasonably. "After all, isn't it said that one has more love the more of it one gives away? I hardly see why this should be any different."

Will's eyes move to Puck's face, and, a minute later, he smiles. It's slight and not so fond as usual, but it is certainly a thoughtful one and his eyes are lit and happy. "I guess that's right," he agrees. "It sounds right, doesn't it? I don't know about cards and songs, but it sounds right for love."

Puck shrugs fluidly.

"I confess I am rather green in such matters," he says. "It may sound right-- I scarcely know. Now friendship--"

He smiles sweetly.

"That has been most conclusively quantified, so far as I am concerned."

"Really?"

Will looks amused, leaning onto the table. "How on earth did you manage that? I've always thought friendship was unquantifiable."

"Not if you are apprised of the secret," Puck says, looking terribly mysterious.

He draws out the moment.

Sometimes he's annoying that way.

Kirjava looks at him.

Her ear flicks.

Will looks at him.

With interest, "Alright. What secret is that?"

Puck smiles brightly.

"There is an apple, as it happens," he says. "Or quite a few apples; I've no idea the precise number. At any rate, a rather reputable source assured me that they were the very taste of friendship, and so I essayed to borrow one and see for myself."

He looks thoughtful for a moment.

"The trouble is that the taste of friendship and the taste of one's friends may not be quite the same. But I am, on the whole, quite satisfied."

Tastes like friendship? He looks at Kirjava, and she looks back at him. He thinks of omelettes and hot chocolate and asks, "What did it taste like?"

Puck's second comment hardly has any effect except to make the dark eyes lighten and laugh. "You've been conducting research?"

"Oh, yes," Puck says, very seriously and earnestly. "I should hardly take such a thing on faith, you know."

And he smiles, bright-- and almost a little wistful, if you're attuned to such things.

"Curiously enough ... it seemed to taste of marzipan, in some small amount."

The changing emotions on Will's face are slight and hard to see; his brows come together and his mouth moves minutely, he smiles a little.

Puck looks a little wistful, and Will looks...hopeful. Pleased.

Kirjava stretches out a paw, almost touch Puck but halting in mid-air instead. "Did it really?" she asks.

Puck watches her curiously, not discouraging.

Amiable, "Unless I miss my guess."

He does not mention the licorice.

Kirjava looks happy; her ears move and she steps back to leap into Will's lap. He puts a hand on her back. "I guess we've never really thought about friendship like that. How'd it happen?"

"Quite by accident," Puck says. "The eating of the thing, that is. As I say, 'twas a gift from another friend of mine."

He frowns, head tilting to the side.

"Unless you mean how it came to have the taste of friendship in the first place?"
