Rapunzel is a little sad to find that the weather outside did not last, but it had been a wonderful weekend, for the most part ( Read more... )

Ooooh, dresses.

There may be someone peeking over her shoulder from the bar.

It's absolutely possible.

That's-- a strange and foolish story, yes, but Katara doesn't want to be impolite. She frowns, though, just slightly. What a terrible thing for her parents to do! And a terrible thing for the witch, too!

She would reply to that but Rapunzel's just given her the image of herself, flouncing down the stairs of the bar in the pink, flowy dress. And while Katara pinkens again to think of it-- she's grinning, too, even as she shakes her head.

"Oh, no, I'd just look-- silly. That's for-- for something nice, like what you're doing, like a party or something."

Rapunzel tuts, sets the catalog face down on the bar and requests for the dress in question to appear in Katara's size, but to be charged to her card. She can certainly afford it, after all, and she likes being impulsive.

"Then you make your own party, or invite someone you like to dinner."

When a white box appears similar to the previous one, she smiles and presents it to the girl.

"I can"t hurt to try it on and see if you like it. If you don't just return it to the bar, and no harm done. If you do, then wear it for a special occasion some time, and have some fun."

"Oh, wait, no--"

But impulsive people are very quick and Katara is not just a little out of her element here. She's had people give her gifts before, but nothing like this, and never right off the bat.

Blushing and shy, this is not the Master Waterbender at all but a girl with few belongings for girls. It doesn't mean she doesn't have manners, though, and her hands are out to tentatively take the box, as if waiting for Rapunzel to pull it back to herself in a moment.

"...Thank you. Really, this is-- it's so nice of you, I don't even know what I'd-- I mean, thank you so much."

Now she just needs to find something to do with it so it isn't wasted!

Yes, Rapunzel is both impulsive and quick.

"It's my pleasure. Really. I hope that it suits you as well as I think it will. And that you'll make and excuse to wear it."

She does NOT move to take the box back, and is glad when it's accepted. She can't imagine a world where there's never a reason to wear a pretty dress.

"Where are you from, that doesn't have occasions to dress up?"

"The Southern Tribe, in the world of Four Nations," Katara says quietly, holding the box to her like a precious thing. "I mean, I've dressed up before, for festivals, but it's always basically the same - my people where blue and white leather. I dressed up once in the Earth Kingdom with a friend, but that was just to sneak into a party to try and talk to people. It wasn't really for fun."

A pause and she grins, looking up at Rapunzel with a shrug. "...That dress had a lot more cloth to it, too."

"There's nothing wrong with blue and white leather. I'll bet it goes very well with your eyes--they're very striking with such dark hair."

She smiles at the bit about sneaking into a party.

"Oh...is this dress not modest enough? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with your world or its customs."

For all she knows, showing that much arm or leg could get her stoned to death.

"Thank you," is said again, and it's to Katara's credit that she's starting to get used to the compliments. She doesn't blush quite as badly this time. "People in my world don't have hair like yours - like the sun. A lot of people here do. It's very pretty."

As for modesty, a more public Katara comes into view - the one that almost snorts and waves her hand, dismissing the topic. "Oh, it's not that - I'd run around in my wraps and be fine with that. It's just that it's really cold where I live and anywhere North of us is just kind of weird about how much people can wear at a time. I mean, there's more cloth to this than to my underclothes!"

"Thank you. My hair is a little unusual, even where I'm from, though the color is common enough. My hair grows very, very quickly thanks to the witch that I told you about. I can never wear it such a pretty braid as you do."

She is relived to hear that she hasn't given Katara anything indecent, at least.

"The style of dress in my youth was a lot like that. every inch of bare skin covered from collar bones to our feet. Layers and layers of underskirts...it was horrible, looking back on it."

"Really? Didn't it get hot?"

As for braids, Katara's eyes are wandering over Rapunzel's hair now, curious and thoughtful. "...I bet you could wear it for a little while, if you did the right braid. You could do some loops and things anyway, like these," she says, tugging a little on her own hair loopies. "That would look nice!"

"Unbearably hot, at times. Especially in the summer. Thank heavens those days are long gone."

She smiles and studies Katara's hair with a tiny bit of envy.

"I wish that was possible, but when I say that my hair grows fast, I mean that it will be as long as yours in about five hours."

allican_do February 15 2007, 01:30:47 UTC
"...Oh."

Well, that is fast, isn't it? Still, Katara doesn't seem to want to give up, frowning slightly as she studies the blonde woman's hair. "Still... I mean, if your hair got longer, it would only make these get longer," she says, tugging on the loopies again. "So instead of falling by your ears, like mine, they'd touch your shoulders or-- well, longer if you don't cut it. You could do a lot of things for when you're going somewhere and for a few hours, so it doesn't get quite as long as mine!"

She's a very optimistic girl, Katara. Especially when others seem somehow envious of things she has.

"I think I would have to continuous cut my bangs for that to work, but it is a nice thought. It suits you better than it could ever look on me, I'm sure."

She's let her hair go before, to see if it would ever stop. It had taken nearly two weeks, and her hair had been something in the ballpark of 90 feet long.

"Well, it's pretty anyway," Katara replies, nodding firmly, unshakably convinced. "No matter what length! And with a color like that, you don't need a style for it to look good!"

"Thank you, that 's very sweet of you to say. I'm glad I got the chance to meet you, Katara. I'd love to hear more about the four kingdoms some day. Unfortunately, now that I have my dress picked out, I think it's time to make sure it fits and pack it for my trip to my friend's world."

She smiles warmly, and gestures to the box that Katara is holding.

"You'll want to try that one and make sure it fits, as well."

The firmness is melting away if only because it's hard to be stubborn when Katara has another woman being nice to her. She softens a little, and certainly smiles, holding the box closer to her protectively. "I will. I'll tell you all about them sometime. I'd like to hear about your world, too!"

And its scary clothing.

"Have a good time at your friend's."
