Lake Party Water Post

Feb 10, 2007 09:09

The water is warm, almost too warm to be refreshing, and sparkles in the early afternoon sun as the squid frolics in the distance.

It's the perfect temperature for swimming, and the sun is the perfect temperature to make one need to swim.

So come on in. The water's fine.

Almost too warm.

Alllllmost.

Nick Carraway is floating atop the water in a very tacky pair of swim trunks provided to him by Bar.

He's almost asleep.

There is more blushing. Why is he such a spaz today?

"St. Paul, Minnesota. 1926. You?"

"Connecticut, 2008. Just a little bit of a time difference between us."

"A little bit," Nick repeats, chuckling softly as he begins to rub gently at his shoulders. "Any hovercrafts yet?"

She laughs at that.

"Well, they exist, but they aren't really common. Mostly they have tiny ones that are kid's toys. They haven't replaced cars, or anything."

This gets an impressed whistle.

"I'm afraid an old-fashioned man like myself wouldn't be able to handle seeing such a thing."

And a chuckle! He's totally kidding.

She grins at him. "I'm sure you've seen much stranger things here at Milliways than a hovercraft. How long have you been coming here?"

Excellent question!

"Um... a few months, I'd say?"

He thinks while rubbing the sunblock in. "I went East in October... yeah, so, about four months. I recently spent a week and a half back home, though, when my door came back."

"I've been coming in since October, but the door disappeared for me a couple of weeks ago."

She wasn't really pleased at the time.

"How long were you bound before the door came back for you?"

"Hmm. Until last month. It came back after I realized my life had been kind of pointless, so when my door came back I went to go spend some time with my family."

"That's nice. Family is important, but sometimes I think it's easy to forget when they get on your nerves, or your life gets busy."

"My brother can be a huge pain," he says, "but he's fun to drink with!"

Sometimes.

"And my niece is the most adorable little thing you'd ever imagine."

"It sounds like it was a good visit."

She misses her own family, more than she thought she would.

"Um. Well -- yeah. It was. Sort of."

Totally avoiding the topic of ex-girlfriends, ho!

"What was behind your door?"

"Oh, Mom, younger twin brothers, elderly great aunt, school, work, fencing practice...I like to keep busy."

Yeah, not to mention the world of Faerie.

"Fencing," Nick says, eyebrows raising. "I tried that once, back in college. Didn't do so well."

When his dad said he'd put an eye out with that thing, he almost did.
