Common Sense, The Crisis, Rights of Man, The Age of Reason, and other assorted pamphlets, articles, and letters are in the worn hardcover without its dust jacket that Cooper places on the bar.
How he picked it up -- and where -- isn't important; it's enough to know that he got it during the three years he spent out of the country between high school and college. It's also enough to know that it's full of
marginalia.
Tucked just inside the front cover, with the edges visible, is a folded piece of paper.
Moiraine,
I don't know what will have happened by the time you read this, but this could be the last you hear from me for a while. Harry and I are
going into the Black Lodge to attempt to fix what's gone wrong in Twin Peaks. If there's a way that we can make the dead return to that state, that's the way to do it.
The going theory is that if you enter the Black Lodge with anything other than perfect courage, it will annihilate your soul. I believe I'm prepared this time. I don't know about Harry, but he's willing, and he knows probably better than anyone what is likely to happen to him. He's seen it before.
Thank you for your friendship, Moiraine. My life is richer for knowing you.
Good luck.
Dale Cooper
P.S. I acquired this book from a man in the Andes. He told me that he didn't believe in rhetoric. I don't think he'd ever seen it properly used. I hope you find it helpful.
P.P.S. If you see reason to do so, let Simon Tam know what's happened.
When the book is gone, that's his own cue to go. The Bookhouse is momentarily visible before the front door of Milliways closes behind him.
