Sara is not a bird, nor is she a plane.

She's curled up in her favorite armchair near one of the fireplaces, a mug of coffee in her hands.

She doesn't look precisely happy, but neither does she look angry.

At any rate, she can be bothered. Company would be a welcome distraction from her thoughts.

There is a somewhat scruffy looking pirate of some kind at the Bar, drinking rum (what else) and contemplating the catured lightning in glass tubes overhead. He barely notices the fair lass at the fireplace.

"Ye're the law?" Which is about all he understands. "Like Sir Alanna?" At least the notion of a woman being the law isn't alien anymore.

"Sort of. I do not have the authority to make arrests. As I said, I collect and interpret the physical evidence found at the scene, on the victim, and in other related areas."

"I see." The ideas and concepts behind forensics aren't going to be invented for a while, so Gibbs is parsing this as some strange from of city guard who cleans up messes. And makes sense of them. "That's a very odd way of spending time. Does it work?"

"Most of the time, but not always. The presumption is innocent until proven guilty--and sometimes we can't prove guilt or locate the person responsible."

"That's very sporting of you. Jack and I wouldn't wepct that kind of treatment." NMever mind that they ARE guilty. "But I suppose that if there are murderers and the like out there, there should be some sort of justice for them." Gibbs (as far as he is concerned) is not a murderer.

"It seems futile sometimes--for every murderer, rapist, or drug dealer put away, ten seem to take their places. But..." and she shrugs. "It is what we do, and we'll keep doing it."

"I suppose that's fair. But only because you don't have any pirates." Rapists are even worse than murderers - some things you just don't do to a woman, even a whore. "But what's wrong with selling drugs?"

"The drugs I refer to get used improperly--not for their intended purposes. Once, it was legal to use them, but now, it is not. To sell or possess such substances is illegal. Drug dealers typically do their best to keep people hooked on their products to the point of death or complete devastation." Her voice is dark. "And often we find that they are involved in other kinds of crime."

"Y' mean opium? Or are you talking about rum?" Lord, he hopes not. Even if it's not his time. "Because opium is the devil's plaything on Earth and rum is but a drink that some occasionally have trouble handling, but not many." These are his only points of reference, as most other drugs are still of a nother age.

"Opium, and drugs made from opium, are one such substance. Alcohol, like rum, isn't illegal in my country if you're over a certain age. But if alcohol gets drunk too much and too heavily, a person can poison himself that way," she says matter of factly. "The other drugs I'm thinking of probably aren't around in your time."

"I've seen a few drown themselves in rum, or scotch, or worse. It's not pretty. But if you want to be a pirate, you probably know how to drink properly, and aren't looking to drown yourself in any fashion." Which doesn't account for the drunken haze Gibbs lived in for much of the past decade.

"I'd suppose so. The main danger with that is becoming addicted to the substance, to the point where you can't function without it." She shrugs again. "It's one problem among many."

"The only sort of addiction I have like that is to money. And it's one that I don't mind feeding." Never mind the rum. "It's a shame that we're stuck here, though. Nothing worth stealing. And Alanna would have our heads if we did."

"Yes, she would. As would probably 99% of most people here." Judging by the look on her face, Sara can be included in that percentile.

"Aye, that might be true. But Alanna might be the only woman - or the only person - who Jack would listen to about that. He's never been one for the concerns of others." A tleast in terms of stealing. "But we're not looking to start a fight. We have to live here, for now."
