The door opens and admits Nita, along with a brief sight of one of the Grand Central tracks and associated noise.

She barely gives the bar a glance, heading instead for a booth and pulling out a notebook (apparently from thin air). Flopping onto the bench, she starts flipping through the notebook and finally settles on a few pagesHer concentration ( Read more... )

Gavroche wanders over and slides into her booth uninvited.

"Dai."

"And you could get there?"

"Yeah -- mostly by accident. We were trying to use the worldgate for a retrieval."

She rests her chin on her hand and continues, "We got the Book back to our New York, and It followed us. It was all set to make our world the same as Its -- no Sun, no stars -- and Kit read the section on New York to keep it real. That wasn't enough, so I read the section on It . . ."

She trails off for a moment, because suddenly the memory feels very important.

"I got to Its Name, and changed one of the characters."

Gavroche's head snaps up and he stares at her. He knows what that means.

"You changed It?"

For a moment, her eyes are very bright, older than they should be.

"It made a choice at the beginning of things, and that bound It into a cycle. The Powers aren't omnipotent -- It couldn't break out of that cycle until someone gave It the chance to."

She gives him a rueful look. "Sorry. That was a lot of information at once."

"Anyway," Nita says, "ever since we got it back to New York, it's sort of been off everyone's radar. Turns out they've been keeping it at the Public Library and databasing it -- putting it onto computers."

"...computers?"

He's at least theoretically aware of what they are, but they don't have them in London Below. And they certainly didn't where he came from.
