Carl asked Bar for a snack to go along with his reading.
He's starting to think he should've been a little more specific than 'surprise me,' though. As it is, he's got these... Mobius-strip onion ring things that don't actually taste like onion rings. It's weird.
In any case, he's going back and forth among the book, the snack, and the people-

Oh, look. Blonde empath, stage right. Well, at the least, she's sitting at a table with a pile of papers around her, three inks, and a few various pens.

And Carl's stuff is more portable, so once he notices Val, he picks it up and heads over.
"You have any ideas what these things are?" he says, referring to the basket of... fried things. "I'm wondering if telling Bar to surprise me was such a good idea after all."

Val looks up and chuckles. "Fried Paradoxes. It's a Milliways tradition. Or something. If you ever see Mark around, the blonde boy with the camera, ask him. He seems to be up on said things." She pauses. "Have a seat. Mind the one on the left, though. I think I spilled blue ink."

"Fried... paradoxes? Well, I guess that explains the one-sided-snack-food thing. I did meet Mark, actually, but that was last week."
Carl finds an ink-free chair and sits down, setting the paradoxes and his book on the table.
