Valerie, seated at the bar, gives him a sidelong look.

"Excellent alcohol it is, too," she remarks, "but it's not a mental episode."

Her voice is British, a little husky.

He looks sideways at her, not really suspicious but just curious as to who his brain had cooked up for him this time. She wasn't speaking in iambic pentameter (she hadn't started on an iamb, anyway) so he was already out of the realm of his usual delusions, but he found that almost comforting.

"Of course you would say that. You're a part of it."

"No, I'm fairly certain I would remember being a hallucination. Besides, don't they say that if you can identify yourself as crazy, you aren't really?"

"That, my dear woman, is a myth," he tells her with a single waggle of a finger, "And trust me, I've been crazy for a few years now."

There is a man some distance down the bar with a cup of tea and a map.

He arches a curious brow at the plunger and then goes back to sipping his tea before he speaks.

"Are you ... quite all right, good sir?"

He turns, utterly cheerful because if he was already there, there was no fear of him losing his mind. You can't lose what you don't have anymore.

"Oh me? Oh, I'm just fine. Splendid, really. I might have been electrocuted, can't really be sure, but I seem to be all right."

Lawence blinks a little.

"Well, I should suggest you might check your pulse. A good deal of people end up here rather dead."

A pause. "Tea?"

"Really?" he asked, obviously surprised, "I never would have guessed."

Amazing how your own mind can surprise you.

"And no, I think I'll skip on the boiled leaves and head straight into the Scotch, if you don't mind. Bartender?"

He looked around for someone he could give his order before realizing it was right there in front of him.

"Huh."
