No one ever expects Milliways for the first time, and Zenobia is no exception. She opens the door and walks in, a little thing dressed (and this is important, or at least noticable) in a heavy tan skirt with a brown tunic and a pale brown headscarf covering her hair and the lower part of her face ( Read more... )

"New here?"

Mary Anne offers a small wave from her table nearby.

Zenobia turns her head to Mary Anne, her bright-dark eyes still rather wide.

"I...I think I am," she says in a low, sweet voice. Accented, of course, it's been a while since she has spoken English.

"This place is a little startling at first. It's called Milliways, the bar at the end of the universe."

She smiles, gesturing to an empty chair. "If you'd like to have a seat, I'll do my best to explain it."

She tilts her head, just slightly, but then nods. Slowly, but graceful as a dancer in her skirt and shoes, she walks over and takes a seat.

The scarf is also staying firmly on.

"I thought...I thought I was going to my apartment?"

A young man, sitting at a table nearby, looks up from his gardening magazine. Strange-looking people aren't unusual at Milliways, but this woman looks strange in a way he knows. (A way he vaguely knows - foreigner from one of the hot countries is as close as his brain can get to placing her way of dress.)

He looks worriedly at her, then clears his throat. "E-excuse me, miss, are you new?"

She turns around and looks at him with rather wide dark eyes.

"Yes...yes, I am."

Oh. Damn. Now Seymour has to think up a speech.

"You're...not where you expected to be," he states, somehow managing to make that sound uncertain. "I mean, I know, I was, uh, I was like that too when I first got here. It's pretty shocking. Still is, a bit."

He adjusts the bill of his baseball cap. "You're...at Milliways. A bar at the end of the universe." He remembers his own dismissal of those words when he first heard them, and adds, "Really."

Santino watched her movements with interest, her near-iridescence only marginally hidden behind her clothing from his preternatural eyes. Their kind always were a little more than obvious to each other.

"Is something wrong, miss?"

He is a vampire. Younger then she, but...one of her kind.

"I was...not expecting this."

He smiled. Much younger, and perhaps even darker. A tan caused by sunlight rather than cosmetics.

"This place takes people by surprise. This is Milliways, and I am Salvatore."
